Trying to make a competitive Purphoros, God of the Forge deck...

Commander Deck Help forum

However, there are so many options for themes and subthemes, so what would lead to the most competitive deck?

  • Nontoken creature heavy, utilizing etb's to abuse reanimation, flicker, and making token copies
  • Spellslinger to abuse cards that trigger off of, copy, or recur instants/sorceries
  • Storm using lots of rituals and ways to refill hands to try to get a huge Empty the Warrens off.
  • Artifact heavy to abuse cards that trigger off of, copy, or recur artifacts
  • Goblin heavy? That doesn't seem right
  • Anti-control, by stopping counterspells, tutors, extra turns, Nonbasic lands, etc.
  • Mass land destruction/stax to poke opponents until they die without them being able to stop me
  • Pillow fort/stax to prevent getting dealt retaliatory damage
  • Infinite mana via Reiterate + ritual producing more than six mana
  • Infinite attackers via Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker + Zealous Conscripts
  • Board wipe heavy to neuter opponents
  • Double damage effects to speed up everyone's clocks
  • Failsafe cards that let me win without my commander by buffing up all my tokens
  • Ramp so that I can do stuff more?
  • Artifact destruction for value?

Did I miss anything? If not, what combination sets me up the best since there's no way I can fit all that into one deck...

So being the local cEDH guru here is my 2 cents on being competitive:

  1. The count to 20 plan is one of the best plans out there. People use their life as a resource heavily in cEDH, so count to 20 becomes count to 15 or less quite often. Also life gain basically does not exist in the format.

  2. Land Purph ASAP. He is near impossible to be rid of in cEDH, the only regular way to off him is Cyclonic Rift or counterspells.

  3. Play all the Red Elemental Blast effects you can, stops them from countering your stuff.

  4. Mana rocks are your friends, as well as Wheel of Fortune, Gamble ETC.

  5. Don't be afraid to Ruination, unless you are playing against Yisan, this will do wonders.

  6. Kiki-Concripts is a really good second wincon so you will want that.

  7. Pyroclasm/Volcanic Fallout effects are a lot better than you think. There are lots of small dudes which see play and can be easily offed.

  8. You don't have to attack to win, let Purph do the work.

Hope this helps!

Twin Flame and similar effects go infinite with Dualcaster Mage

Grinning Ignus basically says ": deal 2 damage"

Thanks for commenting!

  1. I think Sulfuric Vortex is good enough without the anti-lifegain ability, so is it enough anti-lifegain for the deck, or should I include Leyline of Punishment/Burn at the Stake?
  2. I was thinking about playing all the 2-drop dorks (like Plague Myr) because they land him on turn three and after he's out, they actually trigger damage.
  3. Pyroblast and Red Elemental Blast are the only ones I know, or should I play Reverberate and Fork too?
  4. If you like the idea from point 2, then the only other ramp I wanna play is Hedron Archive and Gilded Lotus. Should I play Gauntlet of Might, Mana Flare, or something else? Also, how many wheels should I play? There's Magus of the Wheel, Memory Jar, Reforge the Soul, Wheel of Fate, and Wheel of Fortune. As for tutors, all I know about is Gamble and Imperial Recruiter, because Hoarding Dragon is too slow, right? Basically, of the five wheels and two tutors, which should I run?
  5. Yeah I'm planning on using Blood Moon, Magus of the Moon, Ruination, and From the Ashes. Could I use Burning Earth too, or is it too slow?
  6. Kiki-Conscripts sounds like a good plan B.
  7. At that point, wouldn't I be better off with Earthquake-style board wipes that also hit opponents and can scale up?
  8. So a plan B of attack after I land an Eldrazi Monument for example isn't good enough when Purphoros gets targeted a lot?

Thanks again for the input!

Holy moly, Dualcaster Mage combos sound perfect! So I'll include him with Heat Shimmer and Twinflame!

Grinning Ignus, Norin the Wary, and a few other cards are just too good to not include regardless of what the deck actually does.

Then there's Chandra's Spitfire that gets real big real fast

Edit: play Flamekin Harbinger to tutor for it or ignus

Genesis Chamber + Norin the Wary is quite brutal. Impact Tremors is like having another mini Purph.

Goblins pair well with Purphy for the simple fact they are cheap and easily reproduce and those tokens keep your devotion down. Keeping your devotion down is ideal, as an indestructible enchantment is harder to kill than an indestructible creature.

Also, if you are going the spellslinging route (which most Purph decks are instant or sorcery heavy as they produce many tokens) then Young Pyromancer or Guttersnipe will serve you well.

Conjurer's Closet?

Blink a creature ripe with ETB like Siege-Gang Commander.

Throw in Gratuitous Violence for double damage.

mass land destruction such as jokuklhaups and wildfire will help leave the game in your favor. furnace of rath helps you push and it gives you 3 devotion also the dude dorks die to board wipes you might want to consider darksteel ingot and the like to have mana that survives wiping the board so you just always stay ahead. keeping your general on the board is the biggest advantage when you clear the board otherwise. also hammer of purphoros is pretty good with him as well.
