Trying to find a commander.

Commander Deck Help forum

Hi I'm trying to find a commander. My budget for the deck is around $100 USD total which ik isn't much for commander especially considering what I'm looking for. I want a commander that is both competitive but can also play against more casual decks and hopefully preform OKAY in a 1v1 I want something with good interactions with players and cards. I really enjoy Storm like decks as in a deck that dosen't just combo off but that combos off in different ways each time. I'm also okay with combos in that deck i have nothing against combos. My faveorite colors are as follows

I love blue And i love white I love black with white but generaly not without (Cause vindicate is sweet) i like green a lot in commander and red is fine but not my faveorite. I really enjoy 3 color but i understand that's hard on a budget. I know I'm asking A L O T But i figured I'd ask anyway Thanks -Fyr

I think your best bet is to get one of the commander precons and figure out how you want to upgrade it within your budget. All of them are a great starting point.

the Evasive Maneuvers precon is a nice starting point. it can be bought at $40 on ebay, it fits the colors you like to play, and it can be tweaked between generally competitive, busted with combos, and fun and interactive. you will enjoy the synergies with Derevi, Empyrial Tactician, Roon of the Hidden Realm, and Rubinia Soulsinger. if you don't want to do Bant, shop for another precon that appeals to you; they are definitely the way to go in terms of jumping right into the format.

Could I make a budget derevi deck? I always thought she was pretty pricey I suppose that's mostly if your building stax. I'm also not completely new to the format I've played a lot of it proxied testing the decks I've made. But I do agree that pre-cons seem nice for a budget deck

My only real issue with the pre-cons is I'm a person who feels much better when kicking face with a deck that I made rather then a deck I upgraded. Ik that's super nit-picky but to me it feels much more genuine to win with a deck I made myself

if you're looking for card suggestions for any budget, you can peruse the EDHrec Budget category for recommendations for any commander. that website will tell you what cards are included in many cheap decks and give you ideas for directions you can take constructing for a general on a budget. you should still play the individual cards you enjoy, too. i'm not really an expert on derevi, but i believe a competitive budget deck is always possible with some research and experience with the commander. good luck building!

I don't know if you can get it for less than $100 but the breed lethality deck headed by Atraxa, Praetors' Voice is really nice even straight out of the box. She can perform well in 1v1 and multiplayer and does well as a 75%. The 75% theory btw is what it sounds like you want to build, it tries to find a nice middle ground between casual and competitive. You won't be able to do superfriends for <$100 but a +1/+1 counters is pretty easy to do for cheap and a lot of decent stuff comes with the deck for that.

If you can't find that precon for a price that you like wizards keeps all the deck lists on their website and precons really are the best way to get a deck for under $100. You could wait for this years precons but I don't know how long until they hit.

If you really want to build from scratch you could look into some of these: https://edhrec.com/commanders/wub

Oloro, Ageless Ascetic, Zur the Enchanter, and Sydri, Galvanic Genius are amazing. Though something like Brago, King Eternal would be easier on the mana base while still being something that you will get hated out of a game for playing because he is soooooo good.

Even if you're not going to build a precon commander/just modify the deck a bit, the precons can still be good value. Just gutting them for Sol Ring, signets, Command Tower, etc. can be worthwhile.

If you want to play storm. one of the best commanders you can go is Yidris, Maelstrom Weilder. You can build him budget, however you have your work cut out for you. There's also Maelstrom Wanderer who can be very gross.

If want your deck to feel fresh, I would recommend avoid the trap that a lot of players fall into - make sure you have more lines to your win condition than actual win conditions. I see a lot of decks that have 17 infinite mana sinks, however only 1-2 ways of actually assembling an infinite mana loop. this means that while you technically win in a different way each time, you get there the exact same way. Basically you get in your car, drive the same route to the same diner and order the same milkshake, but pay with different coins.

Thank you all for your suggestions and for being patient with my extremely tight specifications. Sydri is an interesting one ( not too mention the absolutely stunning artwork thank your terrese neilson ) i'm going to make a list for her and try it out a bit. She's in good colors has great combo potential and also I love that she has so much variety in her abilities.

Here is my Yidris storm build - it is a bit over your budget, but you can easily cut some more expensive cards like Mana Reflection.

Sydri can make a decent artifact storm commander. Make sure you include Aetherflux Reservoir - you go more nfinite with it and Sydri.

Edric, Spymaster of Trest is fairly competitive, and can be built cheaply with low CMC unblockable creatures.

For tri-colored, Animar, Soul of Elements is a powerhouse that just got a good feature on the command zone on youtube.

Also, Dominaria the next set will have a ton of Legends and this summer we are getting a new batch of Commander precons - you could at least wait till DOM is fully spoiled before making a choice.

Ive built Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind and Mizzix of the Izmagnus very cheaply if youre into that type of deck.

Personally I would steer clear of Kruphix, he seems super boring to both play and build. Especially for someone who wants to do lots of things (i.e. storm).

When i was talking about storm i didn't mean literal storm. i should've specified that I'm talking about decks that aren't actual infinite combo decks Just decks that use a series of synergistic cards to do a thing (I Know that's not exactly storm but hopefully that clears up what i meant)

enpc I'll admit that Kruphix, God of Horizons doesn't seem particularly exciting but you get this constant stream of mana building up turn after turn until you have enough to go and play all the things. Just all the value you get out of storing extra mana is ridiculous. He really begs for some expensive cards though like Seedborn Muse. Some other options are cheaper like Murkfiend Liege and Patron of the Orochi. It is really too bad Prophet of Kruphix is banned or it could be included as another untapper.

My favorite budget commander is Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest and can be built well under $100. Kind of hits your requirements with three color and blue and white being favorites.
