Too much? 4-color Smorgasbord

Commander Deck Help forum

Hi all,

I've been having a hard time figuring out a new deck to build, so I decided to mash together a few ideas. I think there's something here, but it needs quite a bit of changes.

I started with a Mardu Aristocrats deck, but didn't quite like that. In parallel, I tried -1/-1 counters and didn't quite like that. So, I'm trying to use the tokens made from the -1/-1 engines ( Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons , Flourishing Defenses , and a few others) to fuel my aristocrats.

It's pretty lackluster right now, so what do you think? Is this just a pile of cards or could it be a deck?

For some background, my group is pretty casual. Nothing infinite, and for now I want to stick with cards <$5 until I figure out if this will work. Hapatra, Teysa Karlov , and The Scorpion God were among the cards I wanted to play most, which is what led to me 4 colors.

Hey, keep it simple? There's really no reason on a budget to go over the top playing four colors. All this is doing is making the manabase really bad; when for the same amount of funds you spent on a four color manabase you could have a much better two color manabase.

If you want to play casual budget aristocrats I suggest playing two color Orzhov Teysa Karlov with Reveillark and Skullclamp . Another option is three color Abzan Ghave, Guru of Spores with Reveillark and Skullclamp if you want to play green with Teysa. Either of these decks can be budget; deck costs can range from a little less than $100-$200 or more. There's many good expensive price upgrades to make later on. Playing only two colors you can use funds that you would otherwise have to use on dual lands if playing a three or four color deck to instead get other powerful cards such as Skullclamp.

Don't really need red for budget aristocrats. For what red gives you is not worth making the manabase that much worse. Sure red has some good cards, but they're not vital to the strategy if playing Teysa. It's not advisable to try to play four colors with a low budget. A playable four color manabase is going to take too much of the total budget to make. Three colors is already going to be difficult to make. Most likely requiring that one of the colors be a splash.

Thanks for the feedback, multimedia. I should clarify that the budget is just for stuff I don't have - I have the land base to support four colors (basically everything minus duals and ZEN fetches), and haven't put the time into cleaning it up.

Given that, what would be your second concern with the deck?
