To Primal Surge or not to Primal Surge

Commander Deck Help forum

Primal Surge, in case you didn't know its effect.

I had recently built a Karametra, God of Harvests EDH deck (not enchantress), and it's a super fun deck to pilot! I added in Primal Surge because it's a fun and good value card. However, it's never fun when you run into a non-permanent card.

I've recently been debating whether or not I should take out all the non-permanent cards, and replace them with haste enablers for Odric and perhaps some power-boosting creatures.

Without further ado, here's the deck, and feel free to suggest cards to swap in/out for in general!

I would probably keep some non-permanent Stuff to save your creatures incase of mass removal (mass regen/mass protection/mass indestructible)Also some card to kill opponent possible combos (destroy or exile enchant/artifact/creature)

ghoul_Legion I do have a little bit of each card for non-permanents, no harm would be done if I were to take out Primal Surge for Genesis Wave tbh, it's just a matter affording the latter'a rather hefty price tag for me haha.

I run an all-permanent deck with Primal Surge, It's great. You're playing white/green... So don't worry about mass removal... just load it with hamstringing passive ability nullifying effects... Specifically, Dragonlord Dromoka, Grand Abolisher, Gaddock Teeg etc. If you have junk like that in there they will HAVE to either counter surge right at casting, or wipe your stuff before one of those critters drop, otherwise they're done for. Its kind of entertaining to see players hold on to a wipe too long thinking they will one shot your important stuff in bulk only to have their opportunity passed up.

I personally tried a Sliver Primal Surge deck that didn't turn out well.

I think it would do fine now as my playgroup has changed. My previous was really cEDH and Primal Surge is garbage there. Now my deck might work better as I play slower.

The main issue is the playgroup you play in. I figured previously if I'm running Sliver Overlord as the Commander, I could tutor whatever I needed, and Slivers would give me any abilities I needed to make it.

A Primal Surge win is still hard, I'm not convinced it's worth it.

Gleeock I do have Dragonlord Dromoka in the deck, as you mentioned, so it's very hard to interact with the board once I flip my deck over because I have her + Archetype of Endurance out. I do agree with iAzire in the sense it's a rather all-in deck, I recently decided to stick to GW goodstuff because that's how the deck normally plays as. :) Thanks for the input!

Just run Genesis Wave or Tooth and Nail over Primal Surge, which is an extremely bad card. I'm thoroughly convinced that Primal Surge is a trap. Surge was way too high of an opportunity cost (you can't run some of the best cards in Magic if you want to go all-in with it, and a 10 mana spell should always have an impact while Surge can sometimes do absolutely nothing for the mana you put into it).

If you're not in UG to Laboratory Maniac + any draw method at instant speed with Primal Surge, then Surge isn't worth running (I'm actually still convinced it isn't worth running even then because you can't run cheap cards to protect such a fragile combo, either).
