Thran Dynamo or Arcane Signet?

Commander Deck Help forum

Nearly every EDH deck that I have built contains a Thran Dynamo , because of how useful that card is, but I wonder if I should replace it with the new Arcane Signet from Throne of Eldraine, since that card has a lower mana cost and also can produce colored mana. On the other hand, three colorless mana every turn is quite powerful, so may not be worth giving up for only one colored mana.

What does everyone else say about this? Should I replace Thran Dynamo with Arcane Signet ?

Depends really. Does your deck need more fast mana? And what purpose does dynamo serve in the deck? I've only ever used dynamo in 2 decks. The first was a karn deck that used it for infinite mana. The second is a mairsil deck that uses it for infinite mana. I can't believe how much value I get out of such a silly card. But unless you need to play high cmc cards or are going infinite fast mana is probably more useful.

Those cards do entirely different things as far as I am concerned, so it all depends on the deck. Do you need cheap ramp/color fixing, or do you need big mana? I think a majority of the time I would do the signet, but dynamo 100% has its place in colorless and 1 color decks as well as in decks that want to get to 8-9 mana as quick as they can.

DrukenReaps, my EDH decks do tend to have high mana curves, so perhaps the dyanamo may be a better choice.

GhostChieftain, on the other hand, every EDH deck of mine is multicolored, so it is possible that the signet would be better.

Ask yourself one simple question:

"Do I need color fixing or explosive ramp?"

That will pretty much always tell you what you need ;)

or use both?

Here is what I do. Suppose I have a Grixis deck. I use:

Sol Ring, Fellwar Stone, Dimir Signet, Izzet Signet, Rakdos Signet, Mindstone, Commander's Sphere, and lastly either Arcane Signet or Thought Vessel depending how aggressive my draw is.

Those are the 8 basic stones I put into all 3-color decks, using the appropriate guild signers as need be.

If I am running 2-colors, I'll slot in both the Arcane Signet and the Commander's Sphere.

I don't run 4+ colors because there is too much going on for my liking. Similarly I don't run mono-colored or colorless because I find their limitations boring.

If I need ramp in excess of those stones, I'll look for land tutors. Burnished Hart is absolutely amazing, as is Armillary Sphere and Expedition Map if you are not in green. If you are, Blighted Woodland is perfect as you have utility with it until you crack it for two basics.

I know I didn't directly answer your question, but hopefully I got a few ideas rolling here.

If you absolutely need both ramp and mana fixing, I'd say play it safe and do both. There is probably at least one card you can cut and still function. Perhaps a card with a CMC that's a bit too extreme? Anything 9+ is really kind of worthless unless it's like an Eldrazi. You can spend that much mana better, generally speaking.

If the deck is very “mana intensive” and stronger late game, go dynamo, otherwise run signet.
