The Most Unlikely Commanders
Commander Deck Help forum
Posted on Dec. 4, 2015, 12:56 a.m. by SirFowler
I have played a ton of commander decks in my day and love every bit of it, but I like the different commanders that shake things up in the game of edh. For example, Norin the Wary is very unlikely to be great, but in the right deck, he is an absolute beast.
Can anyone here name some of your favorite/weird commanders that hardly anyone ever plays? If I like the creature enough, I'll build a deck around them and post it back here.
I wanted to make it as a community project, so if anyone wishes to join, feel free to do so.

Soramaro, First to Dream seems really fun in a card draw/landfall deck. I've tried building him and didn't really work out but maybe you can!

Norin is ridiculous with that enchantment that swaps permanent that share a type when one enters the battlefield.
I'm also entertained by the prospect of a Mishra Possibility Storm deck, no matter how inconsistent it may be.

I believe you're talking about Confusion in the Ranks. It's great, but I've seen those type of decks before. I want something truly original, to a point where someone says "What the hell? Why would anyone do this?"

Try taking a look at Legends. You'll find a slew of WTF legendary creatures, like Adun Oakenshield. Or Axelrod Gunnarson. Or Boris Devilboon. Or Dakkon Blackblade, for Esper ramp shenanigans. Or Gabriel Angelfire. Or Halfdane actually seems REALLY freakin' cool. Hazezon Tamar is actually a good commander, and I'm sure that you could build a deck out of Tetsuo Umezawa.

Thelon of Havenwood, never seen anyone even try.
Kataki, War's Wage, how bad do you really want to keep that Sol Ring?
Linvala, Keeper of Silence usually part of a deck, not the general.
Meloku the Clouded Mirror, mono-blue landfall and tokens.
Ashling, the Extinguisher, insult to injury.
I'll leave it at that. There's 5 underplayed or not played generals that could be surprisingly good.

For a while I ran a G/B aggro deck with Sapling of Colfenor at the helm. She's indestructible, which is nice, and doesn't do a ton of damage to be seen as big threat. But her card advantage is undeniable. Throw in Well of Lost Dreams and you're rockin!

Seriously, that thing is broken with Amulet of Vigor. There's so many ways to go infinite.

@FAMOUSWATERMELON I run Uyo, Silent Prophet in my Patron build. With those two out, it's ": Copy target instant or sorcery spell." Plus all the Landfall triggers (hi, Eternity Vessel).

I built him once but he wouldn't stop dying :(

I've been thinking of a good way to build him, Jay. Any thoughts?

Lots of bounce and Telepathy seems like the best way to get use out of him.

I think that comment number 13 under this linked forum post covers exactly what you're looking for.

Would I have to make the deck green and black for Thelon of Havenwood. I could attempt to make a commander with him as the leader
December 4, 2015 10:57 a.m.
Thelon is Black-Green, yes.
Obviously the deck runs Conspiracy.

Apparently, ever search database on the internet is messed up for some reason. I tried to narrow down the searches to 'legendary' and 'creature', but it was absolutely random every time I hit the search button. Maybe it's because of the holidays, but still I'm pissed.
Anyway, thanks for your suggestions everybody. I'll try and make weird decks and get back to you based on your ideas. I might even make multiple if my commander lust isn't satisfied enough. :)

I'll do some brewing myself so you've got both myself and SirFowler on your team. :D

Some legendary creatures I'm thinking about brewing:
Atogatog: Atog tribal
Crovax the Cursed: Voltron/sac shenanigans
Adamaro, First to Desire: Effects like Wheel of Fate, Burning Inquiry, and Psychosis Crawler
Sensei Golden-Tail: Samurai tribal
Tahngarth, Talruum Hero: Some kind of Stuffy Doll shenanigans
Asmira, Holy Avenger: Something with Second Sunrise maybe
Iname, Death Aspect: Something with Living End/Living Death and spirit tribal
Celestial Kirin: Wrath on a stick
Cloudhoof Kirin Spirit tribal/mill
Infernal Kirin: Rack like effects
Isamaru, Hound of Konda: Voltron
Baru, Fist of Krosa: Ramp shenanigans
And many, many more

canterlotguardian That's about 2%. Any mana doubler, Trade Routes, pretty much any moonfolk, any two-mana producing lands... there are so many ways to break it.

Norin the Wary is kindof odd, but he goes crazy with Genesis Chamber and Purphoros, God of the Forge.
Plus Command Beacon made some other Commanders playable for once in Phage the Untouchable.
