Sygg, River Guide ideas

Commander Deck Help forum

I've got a friend working on a merfolk/wizard tribal Sygg, River Guide EDH for me to try out, since I've decided that he might be an appealing commander for me. In the meantime though, I may want to work on coming up with my own ideas so we can compare notes.

My thought on this deck leans towards aggro-control. Merfolk aren't big so they die easily. Things that prevent them from dying like counterspells, bounces, etc would be very useful. It's also important to get rid of anything opponents play that would prevent me from using them effectively in combat.

I'd also want to take advantage of how evasive I could make all these fish, and find ways to create combos with them that allow me to get extra value. A lot of merfolk do cool things when tapped or untapped, or when they dome an opponent. If I'm building the deck around merfolk it makes sense that I should exploit this wherever possible.

Based on this, I'm very interested to hear any and all ideas people have on how the deck ought to be built, and I appreciate any suggestions.

I have a list of cards that caught my eye, but it's rather long at about 180 cards, so I wouldn't blame people for not wanting to bother with it. That's totally cool, I'm hoping suggestions in this thread will help me narrow it down into something more like an actual decklist: Time for School.

This video might give you some ideas.

Oh yeah, TCC is awesome. That video did give me plenty of ideas and I came to a lot of the same conclusions as he did; merfolk, wizard sub-theme, "tap matters". But more information to work with is always better.

I've got a budget Sygg, River Guide deck. Usually it wins by commander damage due to Islandwalk. Maybe you'll find something you hadn't considered:
