Commander Deck Help forum

Ok...you read the title...ready for spoilers? Good:EDH Locust God

So this beast of a commander is what I am looking at, and I was thinking of a basic combo deck, with Blue and red used as a draw and cycle deck to get to my main pieces. Though I sat and though and wanted a RU semi beat down deck with this bad boy, something involving Cycling and various looting effects, was looking for some tips? Should I still hide a quick instant combo tucked away in the deck incase my swarm gets shut down?

Was thinking of utilizing: New Perspectives in order to get free cycling to dig through my deck in one or two turns and build a huge army of angry Locusts. and of course the good old Skullclamp is a monster in this deck, paying 1 generic to drawn two and make 2 more locusts to use clamp on, meaning i can win outright if i have infinite, or at least a large amount of, mana.

so thoughts? use all the cycle lands I can, between old ones and the new deserts that is 7 cards right there with cycling, and Amonkhet adds new cards that gain advantage off of cycling. Plus adding cards that allow me to draw more when I draw a card can make the whole combo jsut go nuts.

I see the biggest problem in the mana costs of the locust god. That's 6 mana and it won't stay in play long. Of course, you can play it again for 6 mana but you will have to play this thing and go into any sort of combo in the same turn, which requires even more mana.

You should think about how you can even survive so long and that's the deck then. If this card works at all it's probably in a shell with 20 or more counterspells ranging from 0 to a Maximum of 2 or 3 mana and a shitoad of mana artifacts (maybe with Paradoxical Outcome). I would not rely on the creatures alone though because there are numerous methods to disable these tokens or prevent them from attacking or dealing damage. Something like Impact Tremors or Purphoros, God of the Forge would help.

Phyrexian Altar and Ashnod's Altar would make a three card combo with Skullclamp and the locust god. Tezzeret the Seeker , Trinket Mage, Fabricate, Trophy Mage, Intuition, Long-Term Plans, Transmute Artifact and Academy Ruins are must plays then. You'll need every GOOD tutor and there aren't too many in these colours. Of course my suggestions are not a complete list but you have to keep mana efficiency in mind.

Hm. Tbh, I was thinking of that guy as a win condition for Arjun, the Shifting Flame...

But if your heart is set on him as a general, I would check out Arjun and Niv-Mizzet decks, since they both want you drawing a lot.

Don't forget about Wheeling, U/R is strong in that area. Sprite Noble, Gravitational Shift, and Favorable Winds can easily boost that swarm.

I think I would go with a healthy amount of artifact ramp and try to get him out turn 2 or 3. Dramatic Reversal on Isochron Scepter would be my preferred infinite combo I think. Basically loot your deck for a Mindmoil, Arjun, the Shifting Flame or maybe Laboratory Maniac?

Forgot to mention Mana Echoes also combos with Skullclamp. Altar of the Brood would be good too.

If I have Mana Echoes out with a Skullclamp and I use it on an insect does that give me infinite insects and colorless mana? I think I'm reading mana Echoes right

DarkEclipse18: Le Gasp! You may be right. Assuming God in play, 1 insect, and 1 mana. Pay 1, equip to insect. Insect dies, you draw 2, you add 2 insects and gain 2 mana as they see each other enter the field. 2 mana with 2 insects in play. Pay 1 and repeat.

Oracle ruling on Mana Echoes: You do get to count the creature itself, you even get one mana if it is the only creature you have on the battlefield (assuming it has at least one creature type).

So, even better. You'd get 4 mana with 2 insects in play after 1 rotation of the combo. Yes, a repeatable combo that you could do infinitely. Not to mention, they'd all have haste so assuming no response from opponent or combat tricks, you'd lock the win no matter how many people you are against.

Well remember your drawing 2 with each locust that enters, so it is an easy way to win with Laboratory Maniac, otherwise your gonna have to find a way to discard your hand and refresh your deck, or hope the swarm gets big enough before you deck out.

I thought Skullclamp was scary enough in EDH, oy. Now it joins the ranks of The Chain Veil and Rings of Brighthearth.

That thought actually escaped my mind there DarkEclipse18. And combined with the additional small issue of it being colorless mana you're producing it wouldn't be a lock unless you draw a win-con, get maniac out, or deplete their life total. I'm sure there's plenty of things that can be done with that mana and token count though.

The colorless mana isn't an issue since you can throw Gemstone Array into the deck if you plan to abuse this combo.

Something Like Purphoros, God of the Forge/Impact Tremors/Warstorm Surge makes your insect tokens more deadly, as they do damage on enter, then can attack right away.

If that's not enough, you can hit your board with a Dragonshift for even more damage.
