I think there are good reasons not to run Ryusei. Mono-Red is a particularly mediocre colour, as it lacks card draw, interaction with enchantments, and is generally limited to short-term mana ramp. That is not to say there are not mono-Red decks that can work. I have seen some explosive Purphoros, God of the Forge and Neheb, the Eternal decks, but these play directly to Red’s strengths - making a huge number of small creatures or large, mutual damage spells respectively.

Ryusei does nothing particularly interesting. It effectively is a 5/5 flyer with an ability making it dangerous to kill. It does not give access to many cards that allow you to safely abuse the death ability to your advantage.

Frankly, I see it as a worse version of Child of Alara. While the wrath ability of Ryusei is less devestating to your side of the board, Child of Alara gives access to all five colours (including ramp).

All that said, I am sure a fun casual deck could be built around Ryusei, and I would be curious to see what kind of list you come up with!

The problem with Ryusei, the Falling Star is that he actually has to die to do anything. Just sacrificing and putting him in the command zone never triggers the ability, as dying requires that he goes to the graveyard. It's the same thing with cards like Skullclamp.

This means that you then have to rely on red reaniamtion spells which are basically Nim Deathmantle and Feldon of the Third Path.

It's worth pointing out that dies triggers do not work for commanders unless you choose to let them die instead of sending them to the command zone.

Not many commanders can take advantage of actually hitting the graveyard. It usually takes one of a very few abilities that give you another zone change like you see in the old titans, or a specialized deck built around a gimmick. You could try to make something happen with classic reanimation spells, but mono-red is particularly ill equipped to do that.

If Ryusei had an ETB/LTB trigger instead of 'dies' it'd make an excellent Commander. They're one of my fav Red cards and I'll put Ryusei in any list that needs a creature-based board-wipe, but the wording of its ability all but kills it from the command zone.

There are so many legendary creatures like Ryusei that get no love because they are "strictly worse" than a bunch of similar cards. Lots of players (like me) have a hard time running mediocre cards that we know have a better substitute out there somewhere. If only I didn't know about the internet I might just build decks using only the cards I already own -just like Richard Garfield intended.

Well the good news is, red in cmdr has been getting some love from wizards of the coast, and has been addressing the issues with it's color in cmdr. I'd build it for casual. A red flying deck with board wipes like Earthquake, Mizzium Mortars, and Sudden Demise so that your board is always unaffected by your wraths. You could have the strong enchantments like Warstorm Surge, Sarkhan's Unsealing, and Vicious Shadows to win the game.

All this sounds good but I think it would still be a stronger deck if you had Lathliss, Dragon Queen as the cmdr because most red flying creatures are dragons.

Red has 180ish flying creatures. 83 of them are dragons.

Good luck with you build. I want to see it when it's done.
