Play Group Salty: Help! XD

Commander Deck Help forum

Good Morning Ladies and Gents. It's been a long time since I've requested help, as last time I did, it was for Nekusar the Mindrazer(Which I turned into a Storm deck for a time from the really bad decklist I had before)

As of recently I have pretty much finished building my Arcum Daggson deck(Which I built in response when my play group got tired of fighting Karn, Silver Golem, which was funny when they found out I switched to Arcum instead). You can check out Karn here:Liberty Karn: ONLINE

And see how it got upgraded to this monster here: Library of Artifacts

Currently I am missing two cards for the Arcum deck:(City of Traitors & Mishra's Workshop).

The downside to it is that my play group doesn't want that kind of competitive deck on the table expect for a few of my friends, so I've been requested to build a not as frustrating commander deck for the rest of my group to play against and save Arcum when I do commander tournaments at my local game shops.

So what I have here are a few decks that I've built on Tappout and which one I should build IRL. After selling everything from the Nekusar deck, I can fully build one of these decks. So vote away as to which one of these I should build, or if you just want to leave feedback for any of the decks, go ahead!

Prossh, Skyraider of Kher: I am Fire, I AM DEEAATH!!!

Brago, King Eternal: Eternal Decree

Karador, Ghost Chieftain: The Cycle of Life & Death

The Gitrog Monster: L-L-L-LAND COMBO!!!!!!

Yisan, the Wanderer Bard: A Bard's Tune

Momir Vig, Simic Visionary: Green Creature, Blue Creature, Draw One, Draw Two

Zur the Enchanter: The True Monkey King

I believe a trend you may find with some of these decks is that I really like to tutor and most of the commanders I've picked out are tutor based commanders. I usually try to make decks as competitive as possible, but most likely with any of these guys I'll be building a more "toned-down" version of them so my play group doesn't try to strangle me. I am also open to any suggestion to other commanders. My favorite colors are pretty much Jund colors for the most part, but like playing the whole color wheel pretty much. Thank you very much for reading and I hope your decks achieve the winning image you're going for!

1st off, The Prossh Deck link goes to a modern burn deck. O_o

If your group get salty easily, I recommend avoiding Brago or Zur as these tend to draw hate and salt. They also might not favor a green/blue combo deck. Karador would be fun as long as you don't consistent dig for the triskelion/mikaeus combo each game (you could also adjust this strategy per match according to the play group).

If Jund is your favorite though, play jund! That way you can have a lot of fun playing your colors without the feeling the need to combo (and make your friends salty). If you are a combo player at heart, than smaller combos (not infinite ones that win the game on the spot) may be a nice way to keep the same playstyle.

Build proshh with Conspiracy and the dragons from Khans, Dragon Tempest, the dragon that puts dragons in play each time a dragon attacks, etc. dmaxskin has one. But you may need to tone it down some...but fun to play. I play prossh, put 0/1 dragons into play deal a bunch of damage, then swing and they get +x/0 and trample...yes, this version dies still make people salty....lol

@SamCre1993: Fixed the link, we had literally the same deck name, so I had to make mine sound a bit more dumb via the title xD

I think Prossh with Conspiracy would be fun xD Just sounds like a lot of Dragon madness, it would almost be like a Scion of the Ur-Dragon with just Jund colors xD

How competitive are the rest of the decks in your play group? Your list of options is basically a round up of commanders among the top 25 ever printed while it sounds like from your post that your group is begging you to choose something a bit toned down. That read like a fundamental disconnect unless it's just that they don't like you playing stax decks specifically.

They don't like me playing Stax/Control decks . . . which is pretty much how I've been playing Arcum and Karn xD so the main request is to be more aggressive, less combo, and more pushing in for face damage like the rest of my group pretty much xD

My play group is actually fairly toned in the decks their using, but the compared to my Arcum deck they usually throw in the towel turn 3-4 when I'm going off. We only really have four major decks our circle out of the 11 people that play that are really toned and highly competitive.

  1. My current Arcum deck
  2. Teferi Planeswalker
  3. Yisan the Bard
  4. Sylvala of PARLAY!!

Other then those four decks, everyone else's deck is more surrounded by "fun" & "Gimicks" XD and the person who pilots the Yisan deck is getting the same salt that I'm getting from the play group cause our decks basically do the same thing, just his are creatures, and mine are artifacts.

Gotcha. It's not power level, they just don't like being locked out and want to see you turning things sideways.

In that case Momir Vig, Simic Visionary is another strong option if you don't mind shuffling for hours. It can play out almost like a storm deck except basically everything you do is also a creature.

Or if they're okay with you winning outside of combat, there's also Nekusar, the Mindrazer with Waste Not. It's basically Jeleva Storm but with Waste Not zombies and Nekusar's own abilities as backup plans in case Lab Maniac or Tendrils aren't able to seal a win. Waste Not is also an incredible mana engine when you're chaining wheels.

I did ask them and they would prefer if I actually took an aggro stat at least once in my life(since everything I do is comboing and playing with myself, I'm an not a very interactive player xD)

I did play Nekusar storm for a bit before switching to Karn xD and after I had the horrible Nekusar list before the storm xD

Lich King's Storm

Not the best storm deck but it's something?

But regardless I think I'll be settling for Prossh . . . just without the Food Chain combos in the deck for the sanity of my play group xD

So with the current Prossh deck list, is there any suggections for fixing the mana curve or making sure I have all my colors when I need them? Just wondering as I've been play testing the deck on Tappout and I run into an issue where i'm missing out on one of my three colors when I need said color in hand.

Prossh could be improved by swapping out your Fire-Lit Thicket and probably Savage Lands for the two fetchlands you're missing: Polluted Delta and Misty Rainforest. With such a low land count you often can't afford to have so many lands that, by themselves, only tap for colorless so you might also trim the number of utility lands you run.

Assuming the deck is designed to win ASAP even without the food chain combo, you might find Cabal Coffers underperforms because it requires Urborg and several other lands to really take off, yet most of your land ramp is really land filtering through Crop Rotation, Sylvan Scrying and such that are for finding your Gaea's Cradle or key utility lands.

RnG_Joker says... #13

Thank you very much. This does actually make more sense to removal a lot more the utility lands that tap for colorless, especially if I'm not going to be able to really "abuse" the lands that often.

I'm reading this as "my playgroup isn't as advanced as me so I'm just going to play some of the best generals in EDH to punish them".

RnG_Joker says... #15

Eh I could grab a really shitty commander and still make a really punishing deck if I really felt like I needed to xD but I have the Yisan player for that as he just loves to ruin everyone's lives. xD

But why? You seem to be playing against people that are either unable to buy powerful cards or are new and don't really know how to build well. I ran into a situation like this with my new play group. Day one I met the "best player there" who was running an extremely budget Sharuum combo deck but compared to other players at the shop he was a god. They weren't good. Now any new group I go to I bring an assortment of decks ranging from my competitive Sydri list to my lets talk like a pirate Ramirez DiPietro deck. It's a great thing to do for any new group. First game I decide I'll play mono black Xiahou Dun and gauge their ability. Destroyed them. Pick a weaker deck. Destroyed them. Picked an even weaker deck. Destroyed. Pick my weakest deck. Yup, destroyed them still. I realized these guys were new after game 2 and then realized no one has guided them in any way by the final game. So after about 3 hours of playing the "best" player comes in. He looks the part. Fedora, vape, edgy t-shirt with a saying on it. We sit down and I trample over him. I mean bad. But as I was pushing his face in the mud and preparing to violate him I started to shy away from embarrassing him in front of everyone until I realized that even though he had a crummy deck he still could have either taught the other players to build better or he could have built to their player level. I stuck it in him pretty bad after that.

TL;DR if you're playing low powered decks or players beating them with high powered decks or by being a high powered player doesn't make you a good player, it makes you a crummy person. Try teaching them how to play and build.

Deckologist that's essentially what I do for my LGS. I'm kind of the EDH guru of the place. If someone needs help building a Commander deck, they come to me. Especially if they've never built an EDH deck before, or they're just getting into Magic and their first EDH deck is also their first deck ever. I love working with new guys. :D

I do as well but it depends on their mentality. I have since taken over said playgroup and have been giving them cards and what not to help them with their decks. Even have an EDH class to show them the joys of the format. But every now and then I get a guy and I'm like nah, he's not gonna make it. Example, newest guy we have decided that since it's a casual format that it doesn't matter if he uses banned cards and that no one has the right to get mad at him for doing so. He's not gonna make it.

Haha this is the funniest thing I have seen in a while. You went from a powerful but balanced commander to a broken one. And now you want appease your weak group by picking between a bunch of broken ones. With that being said gitrog is probably the least horrible to play against for your playgroup. I honestly don't think the commander is the issue. They are salty because you are playing legacy and they are playing kitchentop garbage decks. Perhaps find some like minded people or run some group hug effects like Noble Benefactor.

Sooo . . . build a really trolly group hug deck? XD I used to run Nekusar as "group" hug xD but he wasn't friendly enough.

This enough or you need more?

What exactly is so annoying if I may ask? I have absolutely no issue with degenerate commanders or anything he is doing, but his choices are kind of funny considering the fact he is "That guy" within his playgroup.

Deckologist says... #24

It's annoying because we won't win this. Build Squee, Goblin Nabob. If you still win then educate your playgroup instead of beating them senseless. Because right now all you're doing is beating up children as a giant.
