Orzhov into Esper?

Commander Deck Help forum

I'm trying to take my commander deck, Kambal's Orzhov Party and turn it into an esper control/lifegain deck. I have a few ideas but i'm lost on what to take out and add. One of the ideas I had to add was to make it so that the deck took the opponent's creatures and used them, I recently bought Overtaker so I want to include that in the deck. Memnarch is another card I want to include. I also want to have a lot of counter spells included in the deck, but I don't know how I can do all these different ideas at once, Control,Lifegain, And taking the opponent's creatures and cards. If I can buy Sen Triplets I will include it in the deck or make it the commander. So advice on cards and esper commanders is what i'm really looking for, just help in general I guess.

A few of the cards that I need to include are Mystic Remora , Approach of the Second Sun , Swarm Intelligence , and some other cards. I'm okay with buying a few more cards if they're necessary for the deck.

Merieke Ri Berit is a strong contender for your command zone. She is a rather powerful removal engine when paired with Pemmin's Aura or any number of other things. You can also just hold onto a creature or multiple creatures if you use Helm of the Host on her.

DrukenReaps Already added it to my cart on amazon. I have a copy of Helm of the Host and I can
get Pemmin's Aura . Should I get both or just use one of them? I'm actually okay with starting over and purchasing all the cards I need for this commander deck instead of turning my other deck into an esper deck. Thanks for the suggestion though.

DrukenReaps mentions "any number of other things" - includes one of my faves for my Jalira, Master Polymorphist deck, Crab Umbra. Another way to add some protection to the untap effect.

Sen Triplets and Merieke Ri Berit are good commanders for the theft flavor but you not considerimg Oloro, Ageless Ascetic for the life gain?

Hmmm well it can be awkward to turn one deck into another deck... I think if you can afford it just build a totally new deck. If not then it might be helpful to decide on what the must includes from the old deck are and put those in a list. If you haven't already this site will show you all the esper commanders and the average cards people use with them:

BS-T I have been considering Oloro but i'm okay with dropping the lifegain and taking my opponent's spells and creatures as the main focus for this deck though. I want to include Memnarch as well, he's too good of a card to not put in here.

For sure is a fun sounding route, you certainly don't need Oloro, just wondering if you'd gone there.

You can go quite Artifact-y with Triplets if it takes your fancy since they incidentally are - Mindslaver with Academy Ruins / (Buried Ruin+Crucible of Worlds) / Silas Renn, Seeker Adept is on-theme, Filigree Angel if you end up artifact heavy.

Don't forget the Liquimetal Coating for Memnarch too!

If I might play the roll of buzz kill here, I would recommend against a copy/steal deck. And this is for two main reasons:

  1. As a deck gets more synergistic and less "big dumb spells", you will struggle more and more to get value from an opponent's deck. And because you're leveraging an opponent's deck, your strategy will only be as good as theirs is.

  2. You make yourself a target in game and can get people's backs up out of game. Remember that a steal deck is basically a Stax strategy, so you're denying your opponent the ability to play their deck. If you're not comfortable playing outright Stax, then a copy steal deck is just a worse version of that. You also have the potential to get people offside which can linger past a game.

Hey man, how's it going? Still rocking those FNM's? :p I love Triplets, but he's right, it is another douchey deck people won't appreciate playing consistently. Merieke is another option, especially in conjunction with tap and untap effects, but you run into the same issue. Honestly if you want to go artifacts, I'm a big fan of Sydri, Galvanic Genius. Her plus Aetherflux Reservoir with more than 50 life just wins the game. I've always been fascinated with Ertai, the Corrupted as well.

As for staples, besides the typical Cyclonic Rift, Sol Ring, Solemn Simulacrum, Sensei's Divining Top, and Command Tower I'd have to know what deck and strategy you intend to employ. :p Very few cards are universal to all strategies.

Scytec I'm gonna start from scratch with this deck. The cards i've already gotten are Bribery, Mystic Remora, Clone, Seer's Vision, and some other things. I'm hoping to purchase Memnarch, Sen Triplets, , and Aethersnatch . I went to FNM at another game store and mostly everyone there was playing commander but the few who played standard had $200 or more decks. There was a commander deck that had a turn three win which was insane. Everyone played in pods and they played for the chance to win the new commander decks. All the people who go to the game store I went to are kids or people who can spend $10,000 on a deck, mainly commander. So i'm going back to the other game store I went to. My standard deck has too many high cost cards and almost everyone there was playing burn or aggro so I failed miserably. If I add menarche to the deck I plan to add Sydri, Galvanic Genius . It's going to take me forever to finish this deck because of how much the cards cost that I want to put in. For example Demonic Tutor is $44 and I don't have that kind of money so it's going to take at least 5 or 6 months before I have the final product.
