Niv-MIzzet Competitive Duel Commander

I ran a Niv-Mizzet deck that, until recently, was a janky, group hug, spellslinger deck. Then I spilled tea all over it. This made me reconsier my card choices, and now the deck is a lot better. Cut Howling Mine, add Dizzy Spell. Out with Talrand, The Sky Summoner, in with Gamble. However, I still have trouble with my creature base. Outside of my 'mander, I'm only running 14 creatures, and they all tutor/draw cards. What are some good creatures that can help my survive long enough against aggro decks to combo off? Any other random spell suggestions would also be appreciated. I know it's hard to reccomend things without seeing the decklist, but I don't have it at hand. Just assume I don't have anything.

Don't forget Rapid Hybridization, Curse of the Swine, Polymorphist's Jest and Mizzium Mortars (although maybe not the last one: only deals four damage)
Also, help yourself and everyone else, and tell us which Niv Mizzet it is: Firemind or Dracogenius?

Propaganda, Collective Restraint, Burning Sands, AEther Barrier, Pendrell Mists, Overburden, Smoke, Mudslide, Crawlspace, Meishin, the Mind Cage, and possibly AEther Flash could all be good, depending on your meta and list. The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale is likely the best, but is typically out-of-budget for most players. Combine those with some wraths, and you should be set to survive until you can combo out. Without seeing your deck though, all of this is kinda a shot in the dark.

Is True-Name Nemesis allowed in duel commander? Fog Bank and Guard Gomazoa are good defenders and Illusory Ambusher is my last good creature suggestion that works with your deck style.

Chain Reaction, Blasphemous Act, Wash Out, and Cyclonic Rift will all serve you better than creatures to block with. Reds spot removal isn't great in EDH, but Chaos Warp is solid. Blue has stuff like Reality Shift, Ovinize, and Pongify that will help.
