Need help for my friend

Commander Deck Help forum

Hi

My friend used to play with pre-con but he wants to try to build his own deck and i thought i could ask a few questions to help him out.

He loves playing with massive creatures and using a lot of ramp but he gets nuked a lot at our lgs and i would like to know what other color he could play to get some field protection or to be able to reset his bord easly.

Maybe adding a certain color or changing his commander or something?

He's playing with the freya pre-con (the mono green commander deck)

Well, Black is easily one of the bigger helpers. giving you the ability to get the big stuff he likes back.

Red gives him haste which is huge for an aggressive stomp style deck, so that your opponents don't get the whole rotation to respond to the threat.

White has boardwipes and anthem effects which aren't huge for a more stompy deck. but this depends on the commander and the gameplan.

Blue gives you a certain level of protection and board manipulation. Letting you copy things, counter your spells targeting your things, andNot-so-tall creatures that tend to have interesting affects.

Honestly one of the biggest things is card draw and having a plan B in case things go wrong. Having all of your eggs in one basket is not the greatest idea, so always have a backup plan. It's as easy as throwing in an Exsanguinate or Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker+ Zealous Conscripts. Of course it's better if they can dabble into the strategy, so getting them isn't a dead draw.

Yeah, so the problem with mono-G stompy is that it is the epitome of "no backup plan." Control, in particular, thrashes G.

I would most recommend switching to Rashmi, Eternities Crafter, which opens up U countermagic and also ramps insanely, so even after a nuke you should be ok by ramping out more stuff. Or Surrak Dragonclaw, which is like Gruul stompy PLUS countermagic. And it supports the landfall subtheme of your friend's precon, if I recall correctly.

I suggest U over B because the ramp possibilities are expanded, and you also get immense card advantage. And also because every wannabe Spike and their best friend plays reanimator, and it's more grindy than stompy, and easy to trash with graveyard hate.

All colours offer something different. I have a friend who enjoys her Karametra, God of Harvests stompy deck very much. She incorporates cards like Heroic Intervention, Selfless Spirit, Dauntless Escort, and Avacyn, Angel of Hope to protect her board from boardwipes. She also included some universal hexproof in Privileged Position and Archetype of Endurance to create a soft-lock against removal to get the time she needs to Overrun us. Add some Sun Titan, Karmic Guide and Emeria Shepherd and you have a very decent package to keep/rebuild your board. Mass exile still gets through and causes lots of problems, but the density of those kind of effects is VERY low.

If your friend is afraid of boardwipes (assuming you meant that by "but he gets nuked a lot") but doesn't want to include more colours, how about shifting to Kamahl, Fist of Krosa. Threaten to turn everyone's lands into creatures if a boardwipe happens and no-one will ever play one!

As already mentioned, black is excellent for recursion as well (e.g. Meren of Clan Nel Toth), and adds the possibility of a reanimator subtheme. Because it's fun to get a Terastodon on turn 2 sometimes...

As previously stated, his best bet is . Who cares about board wipes when you can just bring everything back from the dead anyways? Another user mentioned Heroic Intervention, theres also cards like Asceticism, Blossoming Defense, Vines of Vastwood, Ranger's Guile that can be used by green to protect his critters.

White and green both have graveyard recursion, it's just not as effective as black. And Abzan has Karador, Ghost Chieftain in addition to whicher W/G/B tricks you want to use.

I think what people have failed to mention so far is that big vanilla beaters are no good in multiplayer EDH. You always want something secondary out of your large creature. Avenger of Zendikar has tokens, Terastodon brings removal, Soul of the Harvest gives card draw, Karametra, God of Harvests ramps.....stuff like that is better than some giant beater who offers nothing else.

I find that a Xenagos, God of Revels allows me to scratch my giant creatures itch in EDH. You play large creatures and give them evasion and pump them to crazy size. It is resilient to board wipes since you can apply massive pressure without over extending. It is also blazing fast if you include enough ramp, so it gets in before many play groups are even ready for it.

This is my mono green deck I run. Mono Green see if any of these cards help.

The best way for green to recover fast from board wipes is to a) ramp out fast and always be drawing cards b) dont try to win harder. Dumping your hand out leaves you open for board wipes. Hold a few things back if you already have a good board going.

From what it sounds Red or Black would be the best fit for your friend....or just go Jund. White may be a bit too passive/defensive for him while blue may be too much slow play for him to enjoy though blue does have Leviathan's he could ramp into.

tbh EVERY colour has big Creatures that you can Ramp into.

I would give the same advice as Panas, but would like to add a card to save from board wipes Faith's Reward, though it wont save from exiled, but that will happen from time to time.
