Need Help Finding A Commander Deck

Commander Deck Help forum

I am looking for a commander deck that is $100 or less. I want one that has cool synergies instead of combos. Can anyone help?

This was under $100, just recently jumped a bit above. It is an extremely fun and I think (in my meta at least) competitive. Check it out, see if it's something you'd be interested in.

I ALWAYS recommend Roon of the Hidden Realm to people because he teaches players lessons about deck building across all skill and economic levels. He can also be put together at various levels of power, has room for tons of weird pet cards if you want to run them, and can be decently competitive at a low price point.

Blink decks also have lots of room for cool synergies. Draw a bunch of cards with Tishana, Voice of Thunder, keep people from attacking with Stonehorn Dignitary, steal back the Perplexing Chimera to your side of the board after donating it to someone, exile someone's commander until end of turn and then activate Sundial of the Infinite to end the turn and leave their commander permanently in exile, etc.

The problem with Roon is that my friend already uses him and I dont want to copy him

What colors are you interested in playing?

Commander is such a deep and diverse format that saying "a commander deck" is not very helpful to people who might suggest you things as we have no idea what you are looking for and there are so many options.

What is your playstyle? What colours do you like? What 'cool synergies' and strategies (e.g: blink, counters, planeswalkers etc.) do you want to include? What general do you want to run? Do you want to play tribal?

I just want any deck that can win out of nowhere but is not completely broken like narset.

Go something Izzet and put in Deceiver Exarch / Pestermite + Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker / Splinter Twin and there you go then :)

The problem with that is I win once any everyone targets me for the rest of my life, which will make me lose every other game. I really don't want that to happen to me again

Mate, as a long-time player, I can tell you there are no decks out there that consistently win out of nowhere that don't draw hate. You have some generals that carry a reputation for being good and get targeted more often, but you'll never build something that does amazing in your group that won't get shat on by your friends once you start winning a lot.

In my group, I play competitive Grand Arbiter and Kess combo. Both have been proven by the competitive community to be serious contenders. Some of my friends play slightly below this level, some don't. My win rates on these decks isn't too high because people respect them, and rightfully so. I actually win way more when I play my Mimeoplasm deck and that was thrown together from my tradebinder in 1 hour. Granted, I'm a great deck builder with a very deep binder, so my deck is still likely better than most miemoplasm decks out there, but it's still relatively low power and predictable in how it tries to win. But since it's low priority at the table, people don't expend so many resources to stop me or are forced to use them on others.

It's the potential to combo off out of nowhere that justifies a lot of hate you receive. If your opponents can't assess when you're going to go off, they have to assume the answer is soon.

Ok do you have any decklists for a deck like that?

Ok, well take a look at my Kess Splinter Twin deck. I've been playing dedicated Splinter Twin combo with Sedris, the Traitor King for years. Basically myself and some other user came up with the same concept a few years back and that guy helped popularize the deck. Now Kess has drastically improved the deck.

This deck can be fast to combo out, but it's real strength lies in being able to push for the win through many different paths. You can end-step flash in Deceiver Exarch and combo out on your turn, you can reanimate your combo pieces, you can out value people with Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur, or you can strip people's hands with a Wheel of Fortune effect with Notion Thief. In the end, this deck has to be respected.

Contrast that deck with my Mimeoplasm deck. This creation was limited by what I had on me while the other two have been in progress for years. The deck has an awful land base just because I had no really good picks left. The deck has a decent ramp package, efficient mill that doubles as draw, some amount of interaction, and some fatties as payoffs. It's not all that sophisticated but it has some nuance to it. The primary gameplan is to just cast ridiculously high-value cards until you're the last one standing. With Demonic Tutor, you could also combo with Seasons Past and Time Warp.

How about Meren of Clan Nel Toth? She can also be built on a budget and has a diverse range of options available to her, which makes building on budget easier. Aim for progressively generating value and you'll find it easier to win than if you were going for the lightning from clear skies approach.

Some good generals to build with a value-based approach include:

  • Meren of Clan Nel Toth
  • Alesha, Who Smiles at Death
  • Sidisi, Brood Tyrant
  • Brago, King Eternal
  • Ephara, God of the Polis
  • Karador, Ghost Chieftain

You have plenty of other options too. I'd say about a 5th of all legendary creatures can do for what you want. Some are obviously better than others. Just pick colors and approaches that appeal to you.

If you're going to go 3 colors, make sure one of them is green. It makes mana fixing and ramp easier and cheaper.

I used to play Meren of clan nel toth and everyone else hated me for it. I havent found any good cheap decks for the other commanders. Do you know of any?

I just searched some of the recent deck people have put up on TappedOut with a budget range of 80 to 150 in EDH.

I got this Brago deck. I have some problems with it, but it has the potential to interact with people while also generating a ton of value by replaying ETBs.

Then there's this Ayli deck. Again, this deck can do nasty things through its life gain and loss synergies. Has problems also.

There's also this $90 Maelstorm wanderer deck. I have issues with this again, but it's yet another example of something put together on the cheap with the potential to do great things.

just off of that quick search I was able to find tons of deck people have updated in the past 24 hours on the site that match what you're trying to do. You just have to be mindful of your budget when building.

Brago, King Eternal, instant focus... You can do some great budget stuff with Vela the Night-Clad. Depending on your collection Momir Vig, Simic Visionary and Experiment Kraj are really fun to play.

General Tazri is a budget deck to build and it is super fun to play.

Here's my Rashmi deck if you ever want to check it out.

It's a personal unique build (at least I've not found anything that looks even remotely like it). The goal is to keep Rashmi in play (pretty weak so never targeted) and abuse her card advantage ability.

It can also win out of nowhere with Primal Surge where you cast it (can be tutored with Mystical Tutor) to put basically the whole deck into play. Everytime it happens I win the game, but it's a very fragile combo so people are usually OK with them being 'comboed out'.

On a side note, the deck cost me about 120 euros.

Xenagos, God of Revels is a deck that can be built pretty cheaply and can do repectably in most metas. My build Xenagos, God of "You're Swinging with a HOW BIG?" is $140 but includes a Stomping Ground that can be removed and replaced with a Cinder Glade for no loss or with a basic for little loss and an Azusa that I had laying around but doesn't really work in the deck.
