need a new commander

Commander Deck Help forum

so I am torn between who to pick as my new commander. replacing grimgrin, the corpse born, for some reason, he is just not as competitive.

potential replacements:

Ghave, Guru of Spores, Rafiq of the Many, Kresh, the Blood Braided, Nekusar, the Mind Razer

not sure which direction i want to go in yet, but would like something that can handle the heat 1v1 and still be competive in multiplayer as well. open to suggestions from all.

i already have the following built: Riku of Two Reflections (combo), Narset, Enlightened Master (control, extra turns), The Mimeoplasm (gy reanimator)

Rafiq is one of my favourite commanders for higher level play. Berserk plus his ability is disgusting, and Jitte dominates if it ever hits the field.

Friend of None EDH I wasn't sure if you wanted a list or were just looking for CMD ideas.

I'm not a fan of Kresh or Nekusar. Kresh just doesn't really seem good enough, not to mention red isn't a very strong color in Commander. I hate Nekusar. Giving your opponents extra cards is never good. Never.

I have a pretty competitive Ghave list if you wanna check it out. Ghave that Bitch a Combo. Rafiq is also stupid good, but I got bored with Voltron.

ya, my narset list is semi voltron, so I may steer away from rafiq. I have seen that ghave list of yours before, might try it out.

Depends on the type of game you want to play. I create a new commander deck frequently, just to try out combinations and see different commanders in play.

I've created a Nekusar deck, and it was able to finish the table at turn six (and mind, I don't play competitive) , with a bit more tweaking a turn five table sweep is certainly possible. : Turn Loose the Geese (Nekusar, the Mindrazer)

Kresh is a different commander, going for general-damage. Easily done, some equipment, some global sacking, double strike, evasion. Creating a Kresh deck as we speak. But there are numerous examples on this site. In this he is (sort of) similar to Rafiq, I haven't played him nor played against him yet. But he looks promising, cheap cmc, double strike and exalted all rolled into one is pretty nice.

I seen a Ghave deck in action, that was pretty competitive and pretty sick too :) . But again, it is a totally different play style, allowing for massive token spawning and a kill through general damage at the same time.

Play Nekusar as a hard control deck where you are focused 90% on defense with very few cards capable of dealing damage aside from nekusar. This way you can survive tables and take out entire groups. Nekusar is a great grinder, even though you are giving the opponent cards, because it is never worth it if you are playing control and just say no to whatever card they drew.

As hard control you may have some of the same removal and tutors as your Mimeoplasm deck but the nice thing about Nekusar is you're not trying to protect an easy win with 1 or 2 swings of Mimeoplasm killing off each opponent. You're path to victory is safer and more assured, albeit slower.

You could play Nekusar combo/storm and it's great, easy to pop off, and can kill on T4 frequently and T5 often, but it's also shut down easier. Personally I play more to win safely than to win spectacularly or be sorry so I usually play hard control.

I can't add much more to this discussion, but perhaps the deck lists will help you decide.

ah, scratch my last, wrong thread. I think you would enjoy Kresh, the Blood Braided for 1v1, the other decks might be too slow.

How about :Alesha, Who Smiles at Death, Small aggro with ETB effects to reanimate everytime, Think Nekrataal, Bone Shredder, High Priest of Penance, King Macar, the Gold-Cursed for removal. Mentor of the Meek, Mindless Automaton for card draw, Do you really need a specific ETB effect ? Buried Alive works like normal tutors with Alesha. Fun stuff like Mindclaw Shaman, extra damage ? Warstorm Surge, Cathars' Crusade, Purphoros, God of the Forge, Anathemancer with stuff like Ponyback Brigade. Bombs/big stuff?Geist-Honored Monk, Keldon Warlord, Ignition Team, Custodi Soulbinders.Want more effects ? Strionic Resonator Copy those ETB effects !

Doran, the Siege Tower, Beat your opponents to death with your toughness. Yoked Ox into Grizzled Leotau into Doran, the Siege Tower into Slagwurm Armor with swinging every turn hits for 9 in turn 3 and 20 in turn turn 4. A deck like this also uses a lot of creatures with 0, 1 or 2 power and high toughness so lots of cards are cheap to buy.

Both are powerful in 1v1 and they can also be very strong in multiplayer .
