Need a clear direction with Tajic

Commander Deck Help forum

It's my first foray into Boros and I like the idea of an indestructible commander that has the ability to become much larger. I'm planning on going mostly Soldier tribal using Coat of Arms and other similar cards to make.the soldier "weenies" much larger. I don't know what your opinion is on aura cards with Tajic. Since he is indestructible maybe they might be more worthwhile? Auras like Battle Mastery that just tack on the general damage. Also, should I focus on equipment cards? Cards like Fireshrieker that give double strike, and other things which fetch equipment seeing as white has the support for it. Lastly, I plan on including an "unblockable" suite with Whispersilk Cloak, Trailblazer boots, and Rogue's Passage and possibly the various auras that give pro creatures. I know I need enough critters to trigger battalion as well.

There are a lot of cool interactions between soldiers. Tribal sounds cool. You get Preeminent Captain, Captain of the Watch, Assemble the Legion, Catapult Master, and lots of others that do really neat things. Do a gatherer search for soldiers to find some other good options. It is even a relatively cheap tribe for budget purposes. Equipment is generally safer than enchantments, even with an indestructible commander, as you keep yourself from getting 2-for-1'ed by exile effects: Swords to Plowshares, Path to Exile, Condemn, Merciless Eviction, Sever the Bloodline, Ashling, the Extinguisher, etc.

Boros is notorious for being difficult to run with success. White and Red lack ramp and card draw. So you're going to want to support those as best as you can in those colors. I wold definitely invest in Mentor of the Meek, Weathered Wayfarer, Knight of the White Orchid, and with soldier tokens Skullclamp is a must. I'm probably missing a few here, but those will help you make boros run well.

And I'd shoot for equipment more than enchantments.

I'd say the strongest route is to go straight up Voltron and leave behind the unnecessary tribal theme. Here's an example: MagicalHacker - Tajic, Blade of the Legion

The thing to keep tajic's battalion active at all time is to have ways to steal creatures from opponents such as Act of Treason and have ways to fling those creatures back at your opponents such as Brion Stoutarm or a sac outlet such as Ashnod's Altar for value. Your opponents will do anything in their path to wrath your other creatures or spot remove them. Tokens can be used as a subtheme to trigger his ability. Red and white lack card draw have Mentor of the Meek or Staff of Nin.

M a g i c a l H a c k e r: Do you reliably trigger battalion with only 12 creatures? (Granted, you have other token generators). I have put thought into making this voltron and ditching the soldier theme. Or at the very least, being very flexible about it.

My meta has a soldier token deck floating around (think it's mono white however) but sticking with soldiers might trigger Mentor of the Meek quite often and can benefit from the anthems and other effects some of them provide. Granted, Boros has a wide variety of weenies to chose from. I was told to go "armored soldiers" by my meta should I stick with the soldier theme, so I'm assuming that's an equipment based soldier deck?

Those token generators are specifically for the battalion, but knowing what I know now, I'd actually be more willing to say that the battalion trigger is deceptively bad. Sure +5/+5 is good, but as long as you have two attacking guys that won't die from combat AND aren't just destroyed in response. So the battalion is part of his downside, because you have built the best deck around him when you're not activating his battalion.

M a g i c a l H a c k e r Now that I have put some thought into this, I think I might consider another voltron type commander. Bruna, Light of Alabaster or Omnath, Locus of Mana come to mind. I already own most cards needed to make either successful (except Mana Reflection but that's more or less another Gauntlet of Power or Caged Sun which I possess both). Bruna I fear might end up being similar to my Brago deck minus the blinky goodness/cruel control and her 6 cmc is a little high for voltron. I've debated Omnath before. It was a toss up between Omnath and Rhys the Redeemed and I opted for Rhys but I can certainly build an Omnath voltron deck now.

In those color combos, I'd recommend Geist of Saint Traft or Thrun, the Last Troll. :)

Doesn't have to be in those color combos. Geist of Saint Traft... would Strionic Resonator work with his ability? Put 2 4/4 angel tokens tapped and attacking? That would be nasty
