Commander Deck Help forum

Posted on June 10, 2020, 10:26 a.m. by MtgGoofy

Hello everyone!!!

I’m building my first edh homebrew after playing with the symbiotic swarm deck with my roommates for awhile and I fell hard for the format but now I’m stuck between the two following generals for my first brew.

Najeela, the Blade-Blossom Warrior Tribal

General Tazri Allies Tribal.

I’ve been doing research on edhrec about which cards they can main but I’m still unable to decide which one I should go with.

My big question is to figure out which one would be more aggro and which one can work the best with my 3 "pet" cards

1.Sorin Markov

2.Debt to the Deathless

3.Revel in Riches

I’ll look at everyones opinions and I’ll post my decklist afterwards for tips and questions.

Thanks guys!!!

Najeela is for sure better, and would work better with revel also.

I_Want_To_PlayAllTheDecks any reason in particular why she’s so much better ?

MtgGoofy it’s because she has a few cards that can help initiate infinite combos and has access to a large pool of cards since she is a 5 color commander. She is actually one of the tier 0 or tier 1 commanders in terms of competitive edh and I’ve build her as a really high power deck before that cane wipe the table as early as turn 3.

[built] [can] was typing a bit fast and had some spelling mistakes.

Joe_Ken_ to be honest Competitive edh really doesn’t appeal to me. Where just a bunch of friends playing casually, I just want a deck that won’t get buried by a cat, morph and an animar eldrazi deck (these are three of the most annoying I’m facing right now).

Im just not sure which on these two generals can offer me a consistent gameplay with a good board state and a quick recovery after wraths

I’d say if you are wanting to use your pet cards than a black+white commander would be better options than a 5 color one since mana bases can start to get really expensive.

Maybe Teysa Karlov double death triggers may be a good fit, but if you aren’t wanting to do a death trigger theme then Karlov of the Ghost Council could also be good.

A commander I think could be a good idea if you are trying not to get knocked out quickly is Oloro, Ageless Ascetic

Yeah I agree with Joe_Ken_

Then I guess in terms of being agro for edh Najeela is the much better option hands down although your pet cards aren’t really that great for decks that are spread across so many colors.

Here is my Najeela deck, you’ll probably want to tone it down by a lot for your build. Najeela and the war bound

Najeela for sure! Almost solely on the fact that the worrior tribal you want is way stronger, plus double attack phases with all colors means you can actually have a double attack or multiple turn theme as well, could be very strong, ally tribal is good but definitely would be second to warrior here, but that's just between the card you've said you interested, my honest opinion is that if you are just making your first deck 5 color is not the way to go, other have suggested some solid orzov commanders that are killer, and would give you much more enjoyment playing, instead of fretting over mana availability, since a properly balanced mana base can sometimes be the hardest part of a deck that needs the most stunning, and more colors= more time dialing in the perfect balance, I'd say for your first commander deck stick to two or three colors, but at the end of the day if you find the idea of 5 more fun then do it to it! Good luck bud and welcome to the EDH community, always glad to have newcommers

I agree that Orzhov () would be a better choice. Your pet cards fit that theme.

5 color is the hardest mana base to craft. You'll want cards like Chromatic Lantern.

Najeela is the better Commander out of the two options you presented.

If you are running Revel in Riches, you should run Smothering Tithe as well. It also fits in the Orzhov color scheme. Orzhov is my favorite color combo, you should definitely give it a try sometime!!

Sry it's been covered a little but I forgot to add that Sorin and Debt will almost never be playable in 5 color, and will almost always be dead weight in your hand, even in two color I sometimes have a hard time casting Necropotence due to the triple black required, in 5 color you'll end up having to make half your playable cards mana fixers just to make it work for the two or three cards you want.

I would take a good look at your pet cards and figure out what they want, and then build around what Commander best enables that.

Sorin Markov wants to sit on the board and tick up and down.

Debt to the Deathless wants you to have a lot of mana.

Revel in Riches wants opposing creatures to die, and to have lots of Treasure tokens.

Sorin is going to want lots of removal and creatures on your board to keep him safe from enemy creatures. Debt requires two colors very strongly and black can ramp very well. Revel likes the removal angle Sorin agrees with, and any Treasures generated can also go to Debt in a pinch.

As mentioned above, Orzhov (Black/White) or something 3-color centered around that is going to be really great for you. These cards are pretty generically good, so I think anything taking those colors into account could really work for you. Take a peek at what you have access to, and what is interesting to you.
