Mortify or Mythos of Nethroi?

Commander Deck Help forum

In my black/white/green EDH deck, I have a copy of Mortify, which is obviously a very useful card, but I am considering replacing it with the soon-to-be-released Mythos of Nethroi, which is more versatile for the same mana cost. The only drawback that the mythos has is that it will not trigger the third ability of Deathbringer Liege, but that is a very minor drawback.

What does everyone else say about this? Should I replace Mortify with Mythos of Nethroi?

It also matters how good your mana base is, mythos is only REALLY good if you pay all three colors, otherwise it’s just ok. Whereas mortify will always do the same thing, but you have to have the two colors two even be able to cast it. Depending on what else is in the deck Vindicate, Anguished Unmaking, Beast Within, Generous Gift, Oblation and Assassin's Trophy are better options. But if you are adding to those I think I would pick mythos, I play a solid mana base in my 3 color decks and like it more than mortify

Hey, for your deck Beast Within and Generous Gift are better than Putrefy and Mortify. They're also better with the manabase then Mythos of Nethroi. However, I don't think you need any of these cards since you already have a lot of removal. Instead your deck could use more ramp Faeburrow Elder and Arcane Signet.

I would instead cut Aura Mutation for Mythos of Nethroi as the mutation can’t trigger the liege nor can it hit creatures like Mortify.

Also remove Ring of Three Wishes for Increasing Ambition. You will have to spend 20 mana for the ring to cast it and activate it over the course of 3 to 4 turns to maximize its value. Increasing Ambition will cost you 13 total mana to both cast and recast it over a span of 1 to 2 turns. Both cards will find you 3 cards in your deck, so I think the Ambition is a strict upgrade.

StopShot, your first point is a good one, but I wish to keep the mana curve of this deck low, and I also need to be able to generate tokens to sacrifice to Grim Backwoods.

@DemonDragonJ, In that case replace Grim Backwoods with Bonders' Enclave. It costs one less mana to draw a card and you don't need to sacrifice anything for it either.

If you're concerned with overall CMC of the deck I would replace the Aura Mutation with Mythos of Nethroi and counter-balance it by replacing Armadillo Cloak with Dragon Fangs. You do lose the life-gain and it does give less power and toughness, but it's not a 1-time effect as you can always enchant your commander with it from the graveyard for free. Having consistent trample would really help your commander in being able to trigger his effect after all and you have plenty of other ways to give lifelink as well.

With that change the total CMC of your deck would stay the same as you're swapping a 2-cost and 3-cost for a 3-cost and a 2-cost.

StopShot, the general of that deck is Teneb, the Harvester, so I can reanimate any creature that I sacrifice to activate the ability of Grim Backwoods.

Also, what if I replaced Bramblecrush with Mythos of Nethroi? Bramblecrush is an excellent card, but it is a sorcery, whereas Mythos of Nethroi is an instant, and, while it is nice to be able to destroy an annoying land, I feel that having a lower converted mana cost and being able to be cast at any time are more important.
