Marchesa or Vela?

Commander Deck Help forum

I'm making a commander deck and am trying to decide between Marchesa, the Black Rose and Vela the Night-Clad. Thetwo decks I expect to play against are an Animar, Soul of Elements ramp and the same with Omnath, Locus of Rage Any ideas would be great! Thanks!

My vote goes to Marchesa as she usually matches well against creature-based metas. Also is the best color combination. Grixis for life.

Marchesa opens you up for more colours and is extremely strong. She allows you to run board clear in a creature heavy build which is cool.

I'm a big fan of Marchesa, the Black Rose as well, but I'm a little bias as I have a deck with her leading it. I just think she's really fun to play.

I actually have both these commander builds. Haha. Vela is my absolute favorite because you can kill everyone really easily with the Palinchron infinite mana bounce combo. Marchesa is incredibly fun as well though. It really depends on your play preference, Marchesa for aggro-y creature beatdown...Vela for combo/control. Enjoy!!

Both have LTB abilities, but Marchesa returns your creatures to the battlefield when they die. Against creature decks, the possibility of infinite blockers is pretty nice. I vote Marchesa.

Marchesa is really hard for decks, that like to play big creatures and turn them sideways, to deal with.

The only issue you will have is keeping pace with their ramp.

I have to say I prefer Vela the Night-Clad. Building tri-coloured mana bases is a pain and usually much more expensive for a start. The other benefit of Vela is that she gives you a win condition. All you need is a sac loop or bonce loop (like Ghostly Flicker, Archaeomancer and Gilded Lotus) and that's game.

If possible, go Grixis. It can never hurt to have access to a third color. Even if your deck is half blue/ half black with just a sliver of red for what you need.

OK then just got back home. I'm very glad that everyone commented on my deck. I'm also interested in the cards you think would fit nicely into the deck build. Thanks again!

In general, if you want to scope out how a certain general looks like, try checking out EDHRec.

Oh, and browse some of the higher rated deck lists for your general. If you've got any questions or want deck help after you've put together an EDH list, tag me or shoot away here.

For me, Vela's high cmc makes her unplayable for a deck to withstand any hate or focus from a group imo, so I also vote Marchesa. I also think the amount of colors on a commander shouldn't matter since every color combo has pros and cons, but yet three color decks are still the most popular.

Is there any reason why you couldn't run Marchesa, the Black Rose as your commander and then have Vela the Night-Clad in the deck? I think that Vela could complement Marchesa fairly well, depending on your build. Cavern Harpy would be a good inclusion because you can use it for bounce shenanigans and it could be used to lower your life total to keep the Dethone triggers rolling. For your meta you may want to be playing blue bounce creatures like Man-o'-War anyway, since they'll make it easier to keep Animar in check.
