Making the most out of Solemnity

Commander Deck Help forum

Hi all, I'm doing some finishing touches on my Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim deck Ayli reflects, Boon or Wound? and I'm curious if I have forgotten any good combos with the new Solemnity?

I have the following in the deck so far: Dark Depths, Lost Auramancers , Phyrexian Unlife, Mikaeus, the Unhallowed and Celestial Convergence.

Also two cumulative upkeep cards: Glacial Chasm and Sustaining Spirit .

I know I could possibly add Puppeteer Clique but it's only great depending on opponents deck so I'm mulling it over. Are there any cards I may have missed in orzhov that would also work with Solemnity here? Thanks!

I think you've covered most of the good ones. Force Bubble maybe? I guess it works like Glacial Chasm. Inner Sanctum?

Delaying Shield is just good, but way better with Solemnity

Also I'm a bit confused about the interaction with Celestial Convergence, with no counters placed on it does it automatically trigger the win/draw condition on entering?

dlamars, Not automatically unless you gave it flash somehow (Vedalken Orrery for one) and played it on your opponent's end step.

It would still need to come through your upkeep with no omen counters to trigger.

Decree of Silence basically becomes a giant middle finger to your opponents...

Going directly into my Ertai, the Corrupted deck, BTW...

Steelspike hmm well I'm confused because the win/draw trigger happens if it has no counters unlike Lost Auramancers which happens upon losing all counters. What does upkeep have to do with it the way it is worded?

Just to explain my reasoning Dark Depths has a similar condition to Celestial Convergence, at least as I read it.

dlamars "At the beginning of your upkeep" are the important words there.

You can't cast it during your untap phase (unless you give it flash somehow), so it won't be on the battlefield to check for counters at the beginning of your upkeep.

Dark Depths doesn't use the words "at the beginning of your upkeep". It says "when Dark Depths has no ice counters on it..." so it continually checks throughout the game for said ice counters.

The wording on a card is one of the most important clues to what exactly the card does.

Hope that helped :)

Yeah I kept reading it as two separate triggered events, one removes a counter(at the beginning of upkeep) the other checks for counters(if). I think the difference between "if" and "when" for checking counters had me messed up, thanks for the help clearing it up.

I personally really like Geralf's Messenger. Also thanks for this, I had not thought of using Celestial Convergence, Sustaining Spirit and Lost Auramancers to combo with Solemnity. I'll have to add those to my own Ayli deck.

Yeah I used to run Geralf's Messenger with the Retribution of the Ancients/Phyrexian Altar combo. The problem for me is with his cost and coming into play tapped he is kinda terrible in edh unless comboing out. I run Mikaeus, the Unhallowed instead but he isn't a huge part of the deck since I chose not to include the altars/Exsanguinate.

Feel free to link your list, it'd be cool to see what you're running!
