Making a Stompy-er Deck.

Commander Deck Help forum

Ok I know the title is a little non-specific, but I'm a Johnny/Timmy style of player that likes to use some bigger creatures and big spells to win. I've been looking for a commander that can kinda do that for me. Personally I don't really wanna play animar, mostly because he either evolves into combo, or really invests into the eldrazi titans and Blightsteel. (which gets expensive fast) Considering my budget is up to 150$ for a start.

Some commanders I've been looking into. include

Mina and Denn, Wildborn

Nylea, God of the Hunt

Ezuri, Claw of Progress

Though Ezuri isn't necessarily, big stuff off the bat I was fiddling with him on cockatrice. His massive downside was that if he was the least bit focused you were pretty much dead in the water. But he made things huge... hence why I at least tested him.

Nylea is green (ramp) and gives everything trample and you can use her ability to boost your creatures in a pinch or for that much more damage. She's a commander that gives the non evasive big guys some stomp, and with ramp can pump one creature (maybe two) To outrageous heights

Mina and Denn pump out mana like it's going out of style, and with the right cards can get a pretty serious engine going. They're also a little more subtle and can give something trample.

I just wanna know if you guys might have some other ideas

TLDR:

I'm looking for a commander for a "Big Creature.dec" that isn't Animar and won't be focused so hard/has serious protection. That can be effective around 150$ an starting budget.

Mayael the Anima is the best commander for bigCreature.dec

Put your huge critters into play for 5 mana at instant speed.

I'd second the above, except Animar is indisputably the best creature deck and also the one that has the most protection (literally).

You might look into the theros gods. Karametra, God of Harvests is an underrated but really solid Commander for rampy shenanigans imo. And you get access to big mana doublers like Mirari's Wake. I'd also like to see a creature build around Kruphix, God of Horizons since he ramps but also gives you a relevant ability if you're casting things like Shamanic Revelation.

I think the gods are a good pick for creature decks in general since they support, not overwhelm, a creature strat, and they don't draw a lot of hate. And indestructible is a good ability on a commander.

Mina and Denn, Wildborn can be super fun, esp if you include a landfall theme. Most will tell you to just run Omnath, Locus of Rage as commander, but I find its better with him in the 99. With them you can also utilize the 'land to your hand' cards better seeing as you can play more.

If budget is not a constraint you can do a 'lands from the grave' thing too with Titania, Protector of Argoth and Crucible of Worlds, among other spells that allow you to grab lands from the yard.

I'll be that guy then and recommend Omnath, Locus of Rage. He's a bit linear in play but turns a chunk of your ramp into wincon. Red/green is also a pretty cheap mana base with a lot of dual lands available (and if you feel like splashing out, Taiga is pretty cheap as far as ABURs go).

I will second Karametra, God of Harvests. I've had real good luck in multiplayer games with her at the helm. She's an enabler and can do funny things with Whitemane Lion and company (it can return itself) which allows you to ramp into really big stompy creatures like Worldspine Wurm and Avenger of Zendikar (with LOTS of big stompy tokens too) in no time. Landfall mechanics work great too but I wouldn't focus on them only the best like Rampaging Baloths, Lotus Cobra, and/or Emeria Angel. Hunting Grounds seems to be a forgotten card that works wonders in this style of deck too.

Novablast Wurm and Panglacial Wurm need shout-outs too as they work great in a Karametra deck. Novablast Wurm had prevented a lot of my opponents from developing their boards and should it attack Karametra won't affected. Panglacial Wurm is HILARIOUS because no one expects that you're going to drop a 9/5 trample simply due to casting Llanowar Elves- since Karametra allows you to search you're library, you'll have many chances to cast him.

I don't focus on this strategy except for as a finisher but Liege of the Tangle can help turn your easily 17+ lands into 8/8 beatsticks. For this reason as well as the shear amount of lands that can get overextended I recommend Terra Eternal or Splendid Reclamation to a lesser extent.

Anywho if you want an example or ideas here is my deck:

Karametra, Goddess of Terra

The EDH deck I built relies on mana ramp in order to play tons of strong creatures. I would recommend Captain Sisay as your commander, as you can use it to fetch as many strong legendary creatures as you want.

Thank you all for the input.

Karametra, God of Harvests is a commander I've considered. she's safe gives lots of ramp. Pretty solid options. Kinda like Mina and Denn but it's conditional on using creatures.

Mayael the Anima feels a little double edged to me. If she's removed, the deck is a dead in the water, but if you can keep her out she can be a repeatable thing with enough mana.

Kruphix, God of Horizons is something a little more different, kinda leans towards colorless things though. Which can get expensive fast because of the usability and Animar overlap.

Captain Sisay isn't the worst, actually she's a pretty great commander, and the deck can become pretty toolbox. The but all the real big legends are on the expensive side. Honestly I've checked out EDHREC 's pages aside from a few really minor ones the cheaper legends are pretty lame.

I actually noticed a commander while doing some research, Surrak Dragonclaw? He kinda fits the bill, but I've honestly never really seen or heard of one in action. Or maybe Prossh, Skyraider of Kher would he fit that bill? Could he?

But thank you all for the comments so far I will play around a little more.

Also any input on those two I just mentioned would be awesome.

I should probably mention that my budget for the initial deck is up to 150$ seeing as I keep bringing it up. I'll update the post sorry bout that.

Yisan, the Wanderer Bard should work for you. Single color means cheap land base, and green is full of ramp and not bad for card drawing. My version, which is not totally tuned is Yisan search and destroy.

So after some brewing and some research. I made some decks, Surrak, Sisay, Prossh, Yisan, and Kruphix all didn't make the cut. (was really kinda sad that surrak didn't make it but it always ended up being a jumbled mess)

But these are the ones that caught my attention a little more

Mayael the Anima The deck -> Mayael The Animator

It's good (I think) but I'm not entirely sure my ramp to Stomp ratio is ok or if I have too many lands. She's one I got mixed messages from people online.

Nylea, God of the Hunt The deck -> Nylea, God of the Predators

Seems pretty solid, I'm happy with how it's looking

Karametra, God of Harvests The deck -> Karametra, God of the Ramp

This one has a pretty solid engine, Panglacial Wurm looks like a hilarious surprise.

Mina and Denn, Wildborn The deck -> Mina and Denn's Wildborn Stampede

Mina and Denn have a pretty awesome engine, and gruul has amazing ramp and removal. The returning a land to your hand is something I wanted to be able to use to my advantage. Crumbling Vestige looks awesome cause I can abuse it.

These are what it has come down to. Thanks everybody for commenting. Plz leave notes on how I can improve them. I will kinda debate on which to make, cause right now it's a lot closer than I initially thought it would be.

My stomp deck is quite expensive, but maybe it might help you build your Mayael Deck.
