Love Temur and really want to make a EDH deck with it

Commander Deck Help forum

Posted on Sept. 27, 2016, 5:09 p.m. by Cmasa435

About a week ago I had started a thread to find a new edh deck, and I got a lot of great responses. From the ideas given in that thread I looked at Brago, King Eternal and Derevi, Empyrial Tactician. Both are fantastic commanders and I greatly appreciate the input I got but neither of the commanders really clicked with me. I had been looking at lots of different decks trying find anything I liked, and I remembered Temur. I already own a Surrak Dragonclaw deck that revolves around Slivers, and its uber fun plus I simply adore the color combo. Now I was hoping to get input of what would be a fun and powerful Temur commander that I can make on a relatively low budget. As the only Temur commander I have played is Surrak, I am unsure which of the others would be best. Help please!

Riku of Two Reflections is fun and can be built relatively cheap and upgraded later.

Animar, Soul of Elements is another good commander, but the commander himself is more $.

Animar can be a busted combo commander, or very Aggro. He's actually one of the 'cheaper' commander decks I own. He does need to be built around to make him effective, though. Morph creatures work well, as do Eldrazi, and bounce effects like Cloudstone Curio, Ancestral Statue have lots of synergy with him.

I suppose that you could run Intet, the Dreamer as an option, as he's full of possibilities. I just built a Dragon tribal Intet deck that still needs some tweaking. You could take Intet on multiple avenues, though. Future Sight, Sensei's Divining Top, Leyline of Anticipation, Vedalken Orrery, Seedborn Muse, and Garruk's Horde would all fit well in an Intet build.

aeonstoremyliver, pskinn01, Animar, Soul of Elements and Intet, the Dreamer both look like fantastic cards, and while Riku of Two Reflections looks like it could be a crazy fun deck, at first glance it's not really my kind of deck. I have little experience with any of those commanders, as no one in my play group besides myself plays a Temur deck and as said before the only one I play is Surrak. What would you say is the most common, and effective, way these guys are run?

Ive been considering temur and the only one I would want to play for the most part is Maelstrom Wanderer cascade is just super fun

Oh yeah, I forgot about Maelstrom Wanderer! He would also be nuts! Stuff like Bloodbraid Elf, Shardless Agent, Etherium-Horn Sorcerer for value and some big ETB type critters like Inferno Titan and so forth would be value town!

My Animar list, for reference, is very combo-centric:

Voodoo Chile, Slight Return

And my Intet list, which needs tweaking:

That should give you some ideas.

Shameless plug...which probably needs to drop about a dollar, but it's close to where it wants to be.

EmblemMan, thanks for that I had completely spaced on Maelstrom Wanderer and as with most things Temur I don't know much about him, wouldn't you find that the things he cascades into are a bit to random to but overly effective, or am I missing a key component of his kind of deck? aeonstoremyliver, I have seen your decks befor while looking for ideas for Temur stuff and they look fantastic, but are FAR outside what my wallet can handle sadly. I'm a rather poor college student so I'll only have about a max of $150 to spend on a deck, the rest of my $$ is going towards school. Phaetion, I love the look of your Intet deck, it looks fantastic and even better, it's inexpensive! How well does it work? What kind of problems do you run into while playing it?

Cmasa435: I've only tested it a couple of times, but from what I saw, it worked well. I drew so many cards I decked out. Mind you, that's an older version. I've updated the deck constantly to keep it under $30. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to be doing that, but it would be violating the budget if I left it unchecked.

But, yes, feel free to test it and give my your thoughts on it. :)

Cmasa435, there's a lot of money tied up in the land base in a lot of my decks; my collection goes back quite a few decades. That being said, you can get around that with the fetches that ETB tapped like Mountain Valley, Flood Plain, etc. I would invest in shock lands, if possible, though. There are the pain lands from Ice Age, Apocalypse, and the reprints in Origins like Shivan Reef, Karplusan Forest, and Yavimaya Coast. The battle lands like Cinder Glade are relatively cheap, and lastly the Zendikar and Khans ETB life lands like Frontier Bivouac, Kazandu Refuge, Swiftwater Cliffs, Thornwood Falls, and Rugged Highlands are all very cheap.

Staples like Skyshroud Claim, Nature's Lore, Brainstorm, Earthquake, Decimate, Krosan Grip, Mystic Remora, and Explosive Vegetation are around $1.00 or so and worth picking up. A good budget substitute for Sensei's Divining Top is Crystal Ball. Sol Ring should be had for $2-3, Darksteel Ingot, and the Signets are pretty cheap.

One thing that I try to do is make sure I have plenty of ramp and card draw. Card draw is indispensable in EDH and I would say you should have no less than 10 sources. Green has a lot of creature based ramp like Elemental Bond and Garruk's Packleader, red had stuff like Faithless Looting and Reforge the Soul, and blue has outright draw like the aforementioned Brainstorm, Rhystic Study, etc. Staff of Nin and Seer's Sundial are nice and cheap.

I hope that helps give you a shell that's a bit more affordable.

Let me then suggest the last Temur commander, Yasova Dragonclaw. She's really fun in creature heavy metas and super cheap to build. It's a deck with a large role for the commander and fun synergies that make your opponents cry while not being unfair.

Most used cards for Yasova decks

I will second Yasova Dragonclaw. I built a temur dragon commander deck with her and surrak as interchangeable commanders. Its definitely a budget option but she is a heck of a lot of fun and offers me options when my big threats are always targeted.

LittleBlueHero, do you happen to have a decklist for your Yasova Dragonclaw deck? I would love to check it out.

September 28, 2016 9:45 a.m.

I don't have my current build up here but this is what I started with. Its obviously changed a bit since this was put together. I will put my updated list on here tonight after work.

Anyway here was the base for the deck back when Khans was the new hotness. This wasn't a complete deck either. I added some sac outlets and other ways to steal creatures to make it work with either commander. I figured changing commanders from time to time would keep it interesting :)

Thank you LittleBlueHero, I look forward to seeing the updated list, and if the quick glance I gave the older list is any indication it's a fantastic deck.

Thanks for the breakdown of the commanders n0bunga, with the info you have given Animar, Soul of Elements really seems like my kind of thing. I love the Eldrazi, and to make it even better everyone I play with DESPISES them. Yasova Dragonclaw also seems interesting, I enjoy voltron and control type builds, and it's even better when they are mixed together.

n0bunga Plus with Yasova you could run sac outlets and blink effects to either keep the stolen creatures permanently(via blink) or to get advantage out of them through sacing them. I can think of a LOT of ways to go with Yasova, but overall you are right with Animar being the best of Temur. With the ability to drop the Titans for basically nothing, plus his synergy with Morph creatures he seems really versatile from the builds I have been looking at, you can go with a lot of different things with Animar. It's going to be a pain in the ass to pick which one to make.
