Looking for unique cards that change gameplay

Commander Deck Help forum

Posted on Feb. 10, 2017, 3:29 a.m. by Pocketmouse

I want to build a passive commander deck that just toy with the game rules using cards like Confusion in the Ranks, Timesifter, Knowledge Pool, Gate to the AEther, Omen Machine, and Possibility Storm. Creatures would only be there to block, like walls and other creatures with defender- or creatures that change how things are done like Braids, Conjurer Adept. I'm not sure how many cards there are available that are like this, what would you suggest?

If you have a consistent playgroup, this type of deck ends up being a waste of money. After one or two games, no-one will want to play against it.

For me, Arjun, the Shifting Flame is the best commander for this type of deck flavor-wise. Otherwise, any 5 color dude will do. I think that having General Tazri and Confusion in the Ranks in the same deck is quite funny.

Dream Halls, Eye of the Storm, and Hive Mind immediately come to mind.

After searching through my old decks Grip of Chaos and Dimensional Breach are similar to what you're examples. I'd personally look at a few Chaos decks to check out all those random, chaotic cards.

I've waited quite a while to be able to seriously recommend this card. Sands of Time.

Sands of Time could be fun but it was probably more relevant in the time when Mana Burn was a thing. Now it's easy enough to avoid as players can just tap their unused mana sources like Lands and Artifacts on the End Step before their turn. It may effect some creatures though.

Mom's Spaghetti Deck my friend made. Has some good options in it for what you're looking for.

Teferi's Puzzle Box: it messes with any long term strategy your opponents might have.

Mana Maze can really make people sit back and think.

Also, played against someone who put out Knowledge Pool...that was quite interesting and fun. More fun because it let me win using the C16 Cascade commander.

If you just want to make the game more convulted but not so bad that people won't play against it more than once-

Junkyard Rules

Its strong but won't make everyone hate you.

Can't we all just agree to never play Possibility Storm please?

Doran, the Siege Tower is fun and you can keep your friends too!

No Possibility Storm is absolutely amazing. It allows for all kinds of fun stuff!! Like a Turn 4 Avacyn, Angel of Hope!!

That happened to me when we were playing a Planechase EDH game. It was an absolutely great time. Of course she didn't last long because Planechase is chaotic like that.

Note: When we play Planechase EDH, we just put all Planes in a stack in the middle of the table, then they act as usual. Each player is the controlling player during their turn.

Thanks for the suggestions! dlamars, Possibility Storm is a must, especially with this kind deck.

Boza, my play group is actually encouraging me to make it because it switches things up quite a bit. Thanks for the suggestion on the commander, too!
