Looking for a slightly more competitive deck

Commander Deck Help forum

I recently joined a new control/combo heavy playgroup and have realized that my current decks aren't cutting it (xenagos, Rhys, Tazri). I'm looking for a deck that is both fun and competitive and not weak to control/combo.

I'm considering the life gain guy that sits in a chair (Oloro or something?) but want more opinions before I buy the cards. Thanks for any help!

Note; the typical price range of the group is around 300$ (per deck) with the exception of one player whose decks are very high price. Also the decks I saw were Niv-Mizzet curiosity combo, Ramos goodstuff, Giant Frog, Zur combo (used blinks and stuff to draw a bunch of cards), Hannah (they got mana screwed so I didn't get to see much of this deck).

You could probably just upgrade Tazri to a Food Chain deck and be fairly competitive. It would help to see your current list to be able to offer suggestions.

I can post my lists when college gets out for break but that won't be for another week. The Tazri deck was an ally deck but I would be fine with changing it

So... The Locust God offers an obscene amount of card advantage. Distant Melody, Slate of Ancestry, Kindred Discovery and not to forget Mind Over Matter/Dream Halls gives you an insanely good opportunity to draw and then cast your entire deck (Laboratory Maniac, etc

Ok I think I'm going to build a Marath combo deck. My Rhys deck can work as a shell also to save me a bit of money

Fastest ways to jump to a more competitive level is tutoring for an autowin or taxing the combos. Cards like Harsh Mentor, Gaddock Teeg, Aven Mindcensor, Eidolon of Rhetoric, Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, Manglehorn, etc. will force the combo decks to play at a "fair" pace.

This deck of mine is the pinnacle of doing both at the same time.

What you do in your first three turns will set the pace for how you impact the table so make sure those turns matter every game. You have to look at your deck as a devil's advocate and ask if each card you are playing is actually going to have enough turns to play and if so will it even matter.
