Kumena Tyrant of Orazca or Sygg River Guide?

Commander Deck Help forum

Hey all. I know there is an edhrec article about this but I'd like some further input.

Sygg, River Guide:

More of a combo deck, but still Merfolk tribal nonetheless. Misses out on a lot of good green Merfolk from recent sets but gains a few really strong white ones like Stonybrook Schoolmaster. White also gives us decent removal something simic would lack yet it would lose a bit of ramp, but then again it's mostly low costing Merfolk so do we need that much ramp?

Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca:

The newest Merfolk legend and a strong one at that. He's just very versatile, but he does lend himself to a more aggressive fish deck. He's less controlling which drives me off from him abit, but I do already own a copy and a lot of the green Merfolk from drafting.

So my choices here (not going bant since I want a Merfolk commander, not a tap untap commander cough cough derevi) are both really good, trying to make the best deck possible, yet something I'll still enjoy. Thoughts?

I'd say Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca is a much better merfolk commander. I played my buddy's Sygg deck and I feel like it just falls short on a couple of things unless you built it very combo-centric. I feel like Kumena would be really strong though if you wanna build a true merfolk tribal deck.

Kumena is pretty nuts. Path of Discovery, Merrow Commerce, Deeproot Waters, Murkfiend Liege, Wake Thrasher, and Intruder Alarm all work together a little too well. The deck easily switches between combo and aggro strategies.

Tishana, Voice of Thunder is really nice too.

Inalla, Archmage Ritualist. So many good merfolk wizards to copy. It is basically just an emblem for you.

But if you don't feel as crazy as me, I would say kumena.

@luther

Now that actually intrigues me, well the red part that is. There are some red Merfolk and I can see a Jori en build around this... maybe I'll look into that since I like being original lol.

Also Wanderwine Prophets is the main inalla combo, so you aren't even losing the strongest thing in inalla decks

@luther:

Hm as fun that sounds people would focus me in my group. How does Jori En, Ruin Diver sound?

As the commander or in the deck? Either way I don't think it is a bad idea. I think it would be stronger with inalla at the helm, but more flavorful with jori en.

As commander. I don't think I need an inalla deck when 3 people in my pod have one haha

Sounds great! With the low mana curve of merfolk, and some cheap instants and sorceries, you should be able to almost always hit 2 spells.

Jori En would be an interesting tribal commander. The card advantage of this kind of a spell slinger commander could help to bring merfolk to the battlefield. It's a new idea for me because there are less red merfolk than there are green or white.

It would certainly be good with surge cards such as Fall of the Titans and Grip of the Roil and of course Pyromancer's Assault though.
