Izzet Doesn't Do Artifacts.

Commander Deck Help forum

Posted on July 18, 2016, 3:51 a.m. by Postmortal_Pop

I really want to make a artifact focused deck that runs similarly to Darretti builds but there really isn't a synergistic commander for artifacts that I can find. The best I can come up with is to use Jhoira of the Ghitu or Nin, the Pain Artist.

Both have their uses, with jhoira, nothing is a dead draw after turn 3, and nin is not only removal but also card advantage and she gets even better with Darksteel Forge because I wouldn't have to lose my creatures to get cards.

While both of these sound good, I know that I wouldn't be using the commander to its full potential. Jhoira can fee built for a turn 4 Ulamog but that would take away my flavor and style, and nin is nice but she's more of a lacky for nekusar.

What do you guys think? Could it be done? Are there other (X?) commander's that I should consider for this?

Don't get a synergistic commander then.

Keranos is a basically unkillable draw/bolt engine in that sort of deck.

Niv-Mizzet can be a combo piece or win con.

Keranos is cool but even with the colored cards I would be adding I highly doubt I could keep devotion

Taking another look though, Niv-Mizzet could work. It's basically 2 mana to sting and draw and I don't have to tap. I'm putting him on the table

You don't need Devotion set up for any of Keranos, God of Storms' abilities to function. The devotion mechanic only tells you whether or not it's a creature.

Think of him as an enchantment that you can have as your general. An indestructible one that gives you a free Lightning Bolt or draw every turn.

Also, Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind might get you hated out of the game because they will see it and automatically assume you're running a two card infinite combo.

But sometimes I like to punch people with a god lol

I was actually thinking Dracogenius but then I realized that nin is basically the same thing but for half the price. Also, infinite combos run rampant in my play group.

Anytime I have seen Nin, the Pain Artist there was a Stuffy Doll not far behind. The Doll really takes her ability to the next level.

Do you plan on adding infinite combos?

In that case, you should wait until Kaladesh- we're bound to get a UR artifacts-matter legend there :)

Stuffy Doll is one of my favorite cards so that's a bonus

I was actually just thinking about kaladesh and considering whether or not I should start a speculation thread on it. I really hope we get some strong artificers

You are looking for a better version of my Nin modified Built from Scratch precon. Should be easy to do, just pull some of my more dubious cards and add combo pieces.

Jori En, Ruin Diver could be an interesting general. Doesn't normally paint a target at you.

She's not bad as a commander but sadly she's not any better than any other option

I'm thinking I'm going to build the deck to work how I want it and wait till we get a commander that can lead it.

If you want some laughs, you could do Mishra, Artificer Prodigy and just not play black. He's almost completely useless as a commander, BUT he has a combo with Possibility Storm. With him and Storm out, you cast an artifact, trigger Mishra, trigger Storm, resolve Storm which gets you a random artifact from your deck and puts the one you cast first on the bottom of your library, resolve Mishra trigger to search for the first artifact you just put on the bottom of your library and put it into play. :D

And of course Possibility Storm has built-in protection because a player needs to Storm into removal.

Actually I believe he also works with Nullstone Gargoyle. Cast non-creature artifact, trigger Mishra, trigger Gargoyle, counter your artifact with the Gargoyle trigger, resolve Mishra trigger search your graveyard for the spell you just countered and put it into play.

Lots of goofy stuff. :P

... aaaand now I want to build this deck.

Mishra is actually an amazing commander, people just don't realise how good he is because he searches for cards with the same name.

For example Blood Funnel makes all of your non creature artifacts cost less (not mention anything else that's non creature), AND uncounterable. You do need Mishra out for most stupid things, but generally protecting him should be easy.

Guftders actually Mishra builds are my all time favorite EDH build, I love that at first glance everyone just assumes he is useless as commander. Unfortunately, using him requires having a handful of cards more than what I can actually remove. Kind of like jhoira, most of the commander's I could use have pre established designs that fully utilize their own abilities of I chose to build for them I lose my preferred play style, if I build for my play then I can't make full use of the commander.

Check out my artifact based Izzet build: Jori En, Robot Master.

The commander works well for it I think.
