Is Basri ket a good fit in commander

So I was wondering what everyone thinks of adding Basri Ket to my Balan, Wandering Knight voltron deck. I think it could be a good fit with the +1/+1 counters and indestructible, the soldier tokens, the emblem. He's also a 3 cmc planeswalker, which is great. I'm thinking about switching out Darksteel Plate

I think Mikaeus, the Lunarch might want Basri Ket. The indestructible part is not that relevant.

If Balan had vigilance then I'd say he's great. Otherwise he's best in a deck where he already has protection. If your voltron commander was Kemba, Kha Regent then he would be more of an auto-include because he fits better in go wide decks.

I see why you would have the idea; Indestrucible on your commander is useful, espcially when you like to make frequent House calls to your opponents' Command Towers, if you catch my meaning.
I personally wouldn't include it in a Balan, Wandering Knight build, as Darksteel Plate and Hammer of Nazahn are suitable enough replacement esq effects that provide the same benefit, on a artifact body Balan likes to see more than a uppity Planeswalker. Hell, Shield of Kaldra and the whole Kaldra set would be my go to - nothing funnier than just pooping out an colorless legendary thats beefy with all those equipments!

In a voltron deck, I want to advise keeping as many pieces of voltron in as possible, meaning that you want maximum buffs and protection. Basri is worse protection than Darksteel. Might look thru later and see if there’s anything I think he might be a good replacement for.

EleshNornsFs my reasoning was that I have 30 equipment, I have Hammer of Nazahn for indestructible, as well as a dozen distant sources of protection from different colors for her as well.
griffstick I was thinking about building a distant deck to put it in, mikaeus or elesh norn, or kemba.
DeinoStinkus now that is an interesting suggestion. I was picking the plate specifically because it doesn't have a boosting p/t effect lol
RiotRunner789 I actually have a ton of great cards to make a kemba deck, she was my original commander before I got Balan. Maybe I'll consider revisiting.
SimicVisionRy the kaldra artifacts isn't a terrible idea.

VampDemigod I agree lol. It's pretty funny when I get 5-6 equipment blown up then just cast 2 more and get back to business like it's nothing

I like it. The first strike on it is mostly dead but evasion is nice. You could either swap it out for another equipment that only gives evasion or eight and a half tails. Holding up 3 mana seems like a lot, especially in a deck with only 33 lands and limited ramp.

RiotRunner789 I'll probably cut tails for a different creature, I'm running thin on creatures as is so I can't afford to cut even one for a non-creature. You do have a point about tails, he's a serious mana investment, but unlike any of the others be doesn't tap, he can protect against a multitude of different situations. I do agree the first strike is redundant, but flying is good for a number of reasons, and there's always the situation where I play the maul before Balan drops and attach it to a different creature, then both abilities would be relevant. Still, I will take that into consideration thanks!

I disagree on the first strike being bad. It’s generally underrated. If you’re being voltron-y, it’s a great way to protect your commander in combat. Yes, double strike is strictly better, but it’s also pretty rare.
For my part, I live maul. There are better cards, but there are a ton of worse cards.

You have quite a few protective creatures already, so you could consider Kemba to help go wide or Brass Squire for free equip redundancy. I don't remember if you had Puresteel Paladin or not, but if you don't, he also gives free equips with added card draw. He can also get a bit ridiculous with Bloodforged Battleaxe.

VampDemigod I didn't say it was bad, but Balan comes with first strike or double strike on the card, that's why she's an excellent voltron commander. Maul is interesting because it equips for free when it Comes out and I'm not running anything that gives her flying. But it's decent also because there is no other creatures in the deck with first strike. ( it's Bloodforged Battle-Axe not Bloodforged Battleaxe lmao)
RiotRunner789 so Kemba, Kha Regent is a decent card, but I'm not looking to run any creatures that actively want equipment on them because Balan is constantly stealing all of them lol. Brass Squire is not very good in Balan tbh, it doesn't have haste and you're paying 3 mana to equip 1 equipment when Balan can suit up for 2. Puresteel Paladin and Bloodforged Battle-Axe are both cards I love and utilize, oh and Balan and the battle-axe are an amazing combo on their own because you can use her ability to equip the clone axes at instant speed.

I don't think it is the right choice. Basri won't give Balan indestructible during an opponent's turn, which is generally when creatures need it the most. Overall, I'd say that Balan just gets a little more out of the Darksteel Plate.
