Commander Deck Help forum

Posted on June 21, 2015, 9:31 a.m. by MagicalHacker

Hey guys! I could really use some help cutting this down to 62 nonlands, but I have no idea what creatures I want to keep. I'm like 99% sure I'm solid on noncreatures and that I don't want to take any out, but I might just not have enough room for the creatures which should be the whole purpose of the deck. So that's my first issue.

The second issue is the commander. Surprisingly, there isn't a Jund commander for ramp, reanimator, OR Show and Tell effects, (Mayael the Anima, why couldn't you be black?!) so who do I use?

You're going to have to go Adun Oakenshield

I think it's the best option too. It's not horrible or amazing with the deck, but good enough.

That's why I ran Xira Arien as my Jund reanimator general. Gives you card advantage, and everyone will consistently underestimate it until you start beating up on everyone.

It's still up in the air between those two, but the way I see it, Xira can draw into dead cards while Adun could have no good targets. They're very close but which ones better?

Which is more advantageous: thinning out your deck so you can get to your good stuff, or creature recursion that isn't that good because it goes back to your hand where you have to hardcast it again, barring shenanigans with Quicksilver Amulet or the like?

Creature recursion is better because its targeted and more easy to break. Card draw isn't a big problem worth addressing in any sense when you're playing black and green which have amazing tutors and draw.

Well, I am playing a lot of those shenanigans....

Deck thinning is absolutely negligible when you have like Demonic Tutor

After much thought on the commander for the deck, I've decided to go with Xira Arien because my graveyard should basically be accessible with my deck most of the time, so Xira actually gets me more cards to play with than Adun Oakenshield. I can always change it later on too.

Anyways, I've hit a brick wall. I got only 10 cards to remove, preferably of the cards with cmc 7 or greater. Any suggestions on what to remove?

Solemn Simulacrum is value!!! but it's not a showstopper. Utvara Hellkite doesn't have a lot of support.

One thing I do when I am putting a deck together is break it down even more then land/non land.

My categories that I use are land, draw/tutor, ramp, wincon, and flavor/other. I assign a number to each of them, then pile the cards in their respective slot. Then I take each pile, and cut it down to my initially given number. Then my deck is the right number, and I did it in a fraction of the time. I think it helps to stick to those numbers, and compare like cards to each other.

Again, this is just how I have been building. I hope this is something that works for you like it has for me.

Didgeridooda, I should have done that waaay earlier. I do that for control decks (since they have so many moving parts), but doing it for Xira helped me fix the balance soooo well. Thanks for the suggestion! It helped A LOT. :D

No problem. I do it for every deck I make. Sometimes I add a category or something, but cutting down is so easy when you look at it that way.
