i need help picking my first commander.

Commander Deck Help forum

Posted on Aug. 9, 2017, 10:20 p.m. by Morbid_Empress

Now that the new vampire commanders have come out and i know what they are im trying to decide on a commander.

Im trying to make a deck thats budget and casual at least to start with id probly want to upgrade it later as i play with it more and see how it plays.

Anyways these r the commanders i like at the moment and im not sure how to narrow this list down.

I cant decide on playing a deck with Teysa, Envoy of Ghosts, Teysa, Orzhov Scion,Alesha, Who Smiles at Death, Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge,Kaalia of the Vast, or edward markov.

the teysas have some of my favorite art in magic the gathering and let me play orzhov my favorite color combo. Id probly play teysa scion as a token deck with sacrifice themes. which was a similar to one of my first ever mtg decks i built so nostalgia.

id run teysa envoy as some sort of orzhov control deck that wuld let me stall until i could play big orzhov bomb cards that have really cool art imo.

alesha id play similar to little teysa but with less of a token focus and more sac and recur. i dont like her card as much but i still like it and i like the access to red.

kaalia would be cool cause i could play big demons and angles but i probably wont run her unless i manage either sell some cards or trade for her. and i heard she can be unfun for casual. Though its not like i want to run her to be op i just like angel and demon cards a lot.

jeleva i like for a similar thing but for giant instant and sorcerys, and spell combos.

edward markov was actually a bit disappointment. But vampires are my favorite tribe. and i already have some tribal support. so i might just do that if the rest of the precon is good.

so like how do you narrow down what commander to choose and are any of these like unfun for causal or really hard to build on a budget cause that would help me narrow it down.

Honestly, from reading what you like and what your looking for...seems like the best thing to do would be to get the vampire pre-con when it releases...play with it a few times, then start upgrading from there. You can always change the commander down the road.

Plus the pre-cons are usually around $30 and are full of commander staples.

I'd say get the 2017 Vampire pre-con (get Vampire Nighthawk and Olivia Voldaren and go from there) my favorite combo is with Sorin Markov -3 and Debt to the Deathless you could also use Sanguine Bond and Exquisite Blood with Vampiric Tutor Demonic Tutor and Diabolic Tutor to get the key pieces to your combo if you're thinking about upgrading

usaDiabetic I do already have some staples though.cause I d o have the oloro and jewels precons. I never got using them. And other cards I have like phyrexian arena and lightning graves.

Main reason I'm not using them is that I'm just not really feeling oloro and jelevas deck feels like it was actually built for nekusar. Who's cool but just not my thing.

Still if the vampire precon is good it's definitely something I'll think about.

You can't really build a Kaalia of the Vast deck on a budget, just too many expensive cards you want to play off of her. I will say the same thing as others though buy the vampire pre-con and with Edgar Markov's ability you could play Teysa, Orzhov Scion and some sac outlets in the deck already and generate value.

It's actually kind of funny, The Professor from Tolarian Community College just made a video on this and how expensive vampire tribal edh decks can be and then he talked about the new pre con.

Morbid_Empress Yeah I hear ya, wait until the full spoiler comes out, check out the list, get it if you like the look of it and throw in the upgrades.

If ya don't like it, then start the long and difficult journey of building from scratch.

usaDiabetic i saw it kind of loled at all the expensive cards in it.

if i dont like that im pretty sure teysa envoy of ghosts and alesha can be built budget atleast.

especially since i could probly use some pieces from my oloro pre con in jeleva and some other things ive gotten like my lightning greves phyrexian arena and coalition relic.

and i have phurphoros and a heretical healer for if i ran alesha.

Morbid_Empress, I actually run an Alesha deck and I love it. It was decently budget.

It runs on a lot of discard, sacrifice, and using Alesha's ability as one of the major win cons. There is an infinite combo kill as well, but it's not as fun.(but still fun).

I don't have it on here, but hell I might upload it tonight.

Annnnyyyway, you can build anything budget, just as long as it's fun, who cares. But winning every now and then is what can make a deck even more enjoyable....and that can get expensive. ahhh the struggles of a magic player.

So I guess build what you're really drawn to, but wait until the full pre-con spoiler comes out before you follow your heart haha

Honestly Edgar is, in my opinion, the strongest commander we are getting this year. His Eminence ability to spit out 1/1 is nothing to scoff at, combined with Panharmonicon and Anointed Procession you can get quite an army started pretty quickly. Combine this fact with sac outlets and taxing cards like Butcher of Malakir, Grave Pact, Blood Artist to hurt your opponents, or use Skullclamp to draw for these loses, possibly getting more vampires to cast.

Also when he enters the battle, he is a force all his own, a 4/4 haste and first strike is dangerous, and then when he swings he becomes a 5/5 himself while buffing the others around him, combined with Drana, Liberator of Malakir that is 2 +1/+1 counters to ALL vampires that are attacking, and if they do not have first strike then this damage will apply to the damage instantly.

Edgar is a cast trigger, Panharmonicon doesn't work with him

I agree that hi token ability has all sorts of uses and is honestly my favorite thing about him. But his casting cost seems very expensive to take advantage of his second ability.

I just hope tribal spell like Elvish Promenade with the vampire tribal will be in the vampire pre-con because only getting a token by casting vampire creature will make it way less effective

i think img probly going t do the vampire precon.

it was close between one of the teysas and vampires. But today when i saw the precon list i saw it had an aristocrat sub theme in it which is what i wouldve done for teysa scion. and i already have some great support for a deck like that like my sorin lord of innistrad, eldrazi monument, indulgent aristocrat, phurphoros in addition to some of the staple type cards i have for the deck. I also like how i have a base to fall back on if i get lost since im new to edh. Also vampires are my favorite tribe and are kind of an obsession of mine.
