I have a hard time picking my General

Commander Deck Help forum

Posted on Jan. 16, 2017, 11:53 a.m. by Magicalswift

I'm new to the whole edh format but i picked up the basic rules and i decided to build my first deck with the color I'm familiar with but after an entire night i can't decide what general to use so I wanted to ask people with more experience than me.

I'm looking for a general with at least in his color identity (i don't care if he got more but i want minimum these)

My play style is a mix between aggro and control, i like to control the field with removal, to take control of creature my opponent own (optional) and to prevent attacks and casting but i also like to have some creatures to hit my opponent and have good "beaters"

I'm also looking for a card in the blue color but i cant remember the name of the creature (someone used it against my friend but i didn't have time to check it up since i was in my own game)One of his skill was to exil itself and get back of the field after and the other skill i remember was to be unblockable for the turn if anyone can tell me the name i would appreciate it

If you like to cast instant and sorceries, Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge is great.

If you like to help people while also hurting them, Nekusar, the Mindrazer is a lot of fun, nothing like killing people with draw.

If you like stealing / copying opponents creatures, Lazav, Dimir Mastermind is a great start.

If you like artifacts, Sydri, Galvanic Genius can do some cool things.

If you like graveyard synergies, Sidisi, Brood Tyrant can also fo cool things.

Anyway those are some of my favorite generals with at least UB in them. Hope this helps!

of the top of my head, Sygg, River Cutthroat might be a commander for you! You want to attack wit creatures (Aggro) and draw cards (Control), and you tend to play a lot of removal to clear out blockers. He also works great with Control Magic effects like Mind Control and Empress Galina because that's one less blocker for your opponents and one more attacker for you! The card your talking about is probably AEtherling. I'm glad your like this card, because it works great it the deck! A great website for card choices for sygg and all the other commanders is EDHREC. I use it a lot for making commander decks. Not trying to be bias here, but another fun deck to play is my specter tribal deck. It controls your opponents hand and board, and your always attacking. I also play many big beaters. You could probably play AEtherling in it. Here's the link:

Tasigur, the Golden Fang is really cool to start with. There's U for card draw and counters, B for removal and G for ramp and dumb creatures.

Leovold, Emissary of Trest is probably a better control commander because he disincentives your opponents from targeting your things and doesn't let them draw extra cards. G has a ton of land tutoring like Sylvan Scrying, Crop Rotation as well as generic stuff like Expedition Map and other G land stuff like Life from the Loam that you can combine with Geier Reach Sanitarium during their upkeep so they don't ever draw for turn.

Gisa and Geralf and Grimgrin, Corpse-Born let you do zombie tribal or something.

Its not much help, but I always start with the commander first and build around that. This way I never lack for synergy. My favorite commander is Damia, Sage of Stone

Someone recommended Sen Triplets at my local game store is it a good suggestion with the play style i have ?

Sen Triplets is a pretty cool deck. Just have lots of ways to make any color mana and use your opponents' decks against them. The rest of your deck can mostly be control.

Fun deck to play but I prefer to build decks that my opponents won't outright hate, and triplets sometimes falls in that category.

Have you tried using edhrec.com to find a commander that fits your playstyle? You can do this either by browsing commanders by colors or by putting in cards you like to see what commanders typically play them. Either way, you can then view cards that the commander typically uses to see what aligns with your plan most.

I know that I am late to the party, but you might wish to consider Wydwen, the Biting Gale. While not as popular in multiplayer edh, she is still a dominating force. U/B are automatic control/tempo generals, and with wydwen you can easily go an aggro strat with faerie tribal, or a voltron/tempo approach using equipment (Sword of Fire and Ice) with control backup (Remand)

you could try Silas Renn, Seeker Adept for some cool artifact shenanigans. that would give you a solid artifact base and you could explore different partner commanders.
using lands like City of Brass and Command Tower can keep your mana supply fairly constant and you could
splash green for Thrasios, Triton Hero;
splash white for Tymna the Weaver;
splash red for Kraum, Ludevic's Opus.

I meant to say this earlier but I was at work. Anyway my friend has a really powerful Lazav, Dimir Mastermind list which has the control element and could easily add an aggro element to it so I'd suggest lazav. If you're interested I could link you his deck.
