How to get around hexproof/shroud with tricks (not spotlight or lighthouse)

Commander Deck Help forum

Posted on April 19, 2016, 12:40 a.m. by Halphinianian

I know there are things like Arcane Lighthouse and Glaring Spotlight, but are there any tricky ways of doing Oblivion Ring-type effects on a creature with hexproof using the stack or something? I am asking this for a flicker deck that plays against a lot of decks with creatures like Narset, Enlightened Master (and they are getting on my nerves), so please keep your suggestions in those colors

Thanks!

Update:

Thanks everyone! I read your comments and borrowed some of the cards that you suggested just to find out that other people had the same problem with playing against my friend's over-powered Narset deck, so he disassembled it. But, on the bright side, I now know some good ways of stopping other hexproof creatures, so that's pretty great.

I would say thank you by putting all of your names in this message, but ain't nobody got time fa dat, so I hope this will suffice.

Not unless you use Arcane Lighthouse, Bonds of Mortality, Archetype of Endurance, Glaring Spotlight, Sudden Spoiling, or some other effect that takes care of their hexproof without actually targeting them to do so. Otherwise you cannot target them with Oblivion Ring-like abilities/spells.

Quick Gatherer search yields no possibilities for this interaction in U/W, barring Lighthouse and Spotlight.

Archetype of Endurance and Bonds of Mortality work in G though.

Maybe a mass blink effect + "end the turn" effect? Day's Undoing is the only one I can think of right now, pretty sure there's an artifact that taps to end the turn.

...Counterspell their Narset? Wrath of God their Narset? Seems easier than trying to remove hexproof.

Sun Titan can put a Pasifism from the graveyard to the battlefield attached to a creature with shroud or hexproof. This does not work with Oblivion Ring effects since it targets after coming into play.

I've always loved Celestial Flare because it gets around Hexproof Shroud and Indestructible. The only thing is it's only really effective when the creature is by itself, or if using multiple ones.

Tragic Arrogance is a personal favorite of mine.

If you blink any aura (ie Flickerwisp), when it reenters the battlefield, you can attach it to any permanent it can enchant, regardless of hexproof/shroud. Auras only target when cast.

A personal favorite of mine for doing this is Reality Acid. For ideas on cards that are good in UW flicker deck and that idea in particular, check out Budget Acid Trip.

The kind of thing you're looking for, it sounds like, is bringing auras out of the graveyard since they only target on the stack. I can't think of a way you can do this with Oblivion Ring, however, because it is not an aura. It can target Emrakul, the Aeons Torn, but that's because Ring has an ETB and isn't a spell when it targets (notwithstanding that's a protection, but the following bypasses that too due to reasons I will explain).

Replenish with a Faith's Fetters, Darksteel Mutation, etc., would do this for you. As would Sun Titan and 2-3 mana Pacifism effects. Any time an aura would enter the battlefield and isn't cast, generally speaking, it can bypass shroud or hexproof (this is kind of the basis for Bruna, Light of Alabaster and why running cards like Diplomatic Immunity don't hurt that Commander if put on first, rather than last).

I guess Simic Guildmage could do this, as well, if the Narset player has another creature for you to attach a Pacifism to (you enchant that creature with Song of the Dryads, or something, and then move it to Narset since the only thing targeted in this is the aura, itself), but the odds of this are basically magical christmasland.

Why go through these hoops, though? The sweepers and counters mentioned would probably be your best bet. Ixidron can especially give Narset players fits, by the way.

Halphinianian if you want you can try Humility I think is the best card to do what you want

Note that Prison Term's triggered effect doesn't target. They'll see this coming though, because you'll have to enchant something before she enters the battlefield to take advantage of the trigger.

Otherwise, I take the approach Boza uses normally, or else deal with the spells Narset casts. Time Stop can unexpectedly ruin Narset's day.

Council's Judgment can basically get through anything. And generally when there is a Narset down, most people will be in a helping mood.

Catalog9000 your suggestion of a board-wipe effect is solid, but your understanding of the "non-white" clause isn't. Narset, Enlightened Master would not be affected by Mass Calcify. Here's an explanation. Hope that helps clarify things a bit :)

April 19, 2016 10:51 a.m.

A creature is all colors that are in the mana cost. Narset is a red/white/blue creature. She is all of those colors. Both individually and collectively. She is never not one of those colors.

Mass Calcify won't destroy her cause she's white and Llawan, Cephalid Empress will bounce her cause she's also blue.

Narset usually has haste; if you go for boardwipes as the solution, you may need instant speed ones, like Rout or Cyclonic Rift. You can't let her have a chance to attack.

If you need to stall, Festival.

End Hostilities and Planar Outburst both slow her down.

My favourite thing to do would be to cast Polymorphist's Jest on all Creatures owned by the Sigarda Player, then target her with Pacifism or Claustrophobia because guess what? Until end of turn she is a 1/1 Froggy without Hexproof.

Sucks to be her.
