Help with Mono-Blue Combos

Commander Deck Help forum

So I have a fun Arcanis the Omnipotent deck with a whole lot of synergies in it and I was wondering how much more were out there. I've got Tunnel Vision+Spin into Myth/Hinder. I've got Isochron Scepter+Dramatic Reversal to get infinite mana, which I would use to Mill someone out with a Blue Sun's Zenith, (and infinite draw if I have Arcanis the Omnipotent out). There's a few more in there but I was wondering what some other fun combos were. Alternately, what are the best ways to get my combos?

Here's the deck:

Generally, mill is a bad win condition. Outside of combo, most mill cards are completely dead and even inside combo, mill is typically one of the easier combos to counter. That being said, Blue Sun's Zenith is a good win condition not becuase it mills, but becuase it immediately decks an opponent.

You have cards like Stroke of Genius which do the same thing as USZ however provide functionality outside of combo as well. You could also look at running Laboratory Maniac who works nicely with Arcanis (you can add Mind Over Matter as another piece that combos with him). There's also Jace's Archivist/Temple Bell who works nicely with both Lab maniac in the combo but who can also be paired with Kozilek, Butcher of Truth so that you can keep discarding him and reshuffling your graveyard while your opponents all deck themselves.

As a whole, I would look at trying to streamline the combos in the deck. you're better off having a few combos that all share cross redundancies than having a few completely segregated combos as they're easier to disrupt and end up taking more slots in the deck.

You're absolutely right. That'll probably work better. Focus more on drawing, but I am getting ready to transition my deck to a Teferi, Temporal Archmage deck soon, with The Chain Veil so I'll have that also. So decking your opponent is better than milling them because they can't fix by running a Kozilek or Elixir of Immortality, right?

Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir and Knowledge Pool is a really fun mono blue combo that everyone loves and your playgroup will definitely be excited if you play it.

entheogeneral: Generally yeah, decking a player is better than milling them. Not only does it avoid graveyard reshuffle but you're not relying on an opponent having to get to their draw step (giving them an untap and upkeep in which they can respond). It knocks them out of the game then and there.

The other thing is that most of the cards you use to deck a player with will provide more in game functionality outside of combo, whereas mill cards are for the most part dead draws except for inside the combo. Becuase using an Increasing Confusion to make somebody mill 5 cards doesn't sound anywhere near as appetising as using a Blue Sun's Zenith to draw three cards.

Obviously there are still places for mill - I use Altar of Dementia in my Saffi Eriksdotter deck. However the reason I use it is becasue it's one of the few infinite sac outlets in green/white that can actually be considered a win condition and I also try to follow it up with an activation of Mikokoro, Center of the Sea / Selvala, Explorer Returned to finish the game then and there.

Those all sound like good combos. I will most certainly get the Deadeye Navigator+Peregrine Drake combo, I love infinite mana. The Grand Architect+Pili-Pala might also fit in here. As for infinite combos in green and white, if I were you, I would use Melira, Sylvok Outcast+Woodfall Primus and an infinite sac outlet or her with Kitchen Finks or Kitchen Finks with Archangel of Thune (and sac outlet)or Archangel of Thune with Spike Feeder; you get the idea. But thanks for the help, guys.

entheogeneral: Actually I've specifically avoided using persist combos in favour of ones that interact with my commander. So things like Sun Titan, Karmic Guide, etc. and coupling it with Blasting Station. Plus Woodfall Primus is like 8 mana :P
