Help Me Find A Fit

Commander Deck Help forum

Hello All!!

I’m looking for a commander deck that fits my favorite play style which is control-combo. My favorite all time deck is modern Temur Scapeshift which looks to control the game and survive until it can Scapeshift the opponent to death. So I’m trying to find an edh deck that fits that play style best.

Now I’m not saying we have to nic fit modern scapeshift into edh, just that I love that type of strategy and want to bring that to edh.

Keep in mind that my LGS has commander nights a couple times a week and the atmosphere is completely casual to “casual competitive”. People here like to do powerful things and play powerful commanders but aren’t necessarily looking to be as spiky as possible. My goal is to be competitive but mostly to just have fun and enjoy playing the play style I enjoy.

Budget is $100-200 initially but I look to upgrading over time. (Mostly play modern and standard anyways).

So based on this, what do you all have for me? Thanks for your time!

Allow me to plug this sweet YouTube channel I found, The Commander's Quarters. Now, I am in no way affiliated with them, but I've used a lot of their ideas as starting points for my decks.

I think you should try out either Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind or Niv-Mizzet, Parun . Both tend to control the board until they can win with either Curiosity or Ophidian Eye . OG Niv is easier on a budget mana base, but paying more for new miv might be preferable for you if you're okay not turbo'ing him out and playing a slower game. Mizzix of the Izmagnus is also very combo-y if you're into Izzet. If you want to go Temur, Animar, Soul of Elements is typically build as a combo deck using Ancestral Statue to go infinite, and the popular Animorphs build is very budget friendly and lends itself well to the Pickles Lock combo of Brine Elemental + Vesuvan Shapeshifter . The Gates deck is a control deck that wins with your favorite one-card combo, Scapeshift . It's a one-trick pony, but if you're into it, I would build it with Child of Alara at the helm. Riku of Two Reflections might be for you if you just want all the value until you can find whatever wincon you like. Finally, if it's the rampy, storm bit you like about Nic Fit and Scapeshift, I love my Tatyova, Benthic Druid druid tribal deck. Chaining land ramp and drawing cards feels very stormy, even more so when going off with Gilt-Leaf Archdruid , Guardian Project , or Beast Whisperer with Seton, Krosan Protector , Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx , Stone-Seeder Hierophant , or Growing Rites of Itlimoc  Flip.

My first EDH deck was Esper combo/control helmed by Oloro, Ageless Ascetic . Oloro is basically an emblem that gains you life every turn. Esper allows you to run all the best board wipes, tutors, and targeted removal. You can use this disruption and consistency to set up a combo turn with any number of infinites and have counterspell backup to protect them.

Here's a deck that features Scapeshift since you mentioned the card above. It is a "Lands Matters" deck that aims to combo win, helmed by an uncommon commander - Tatyova, Benthic Druid .

While the deck has some pricier cards, there're budget options for it too. Link up with me if you're keen to give this a try and we can discuss further. Cheers!

Since you mention control-combo I have to plug my favorite deck Should I Pretend This Or That?. It requires you to control the game on some level until you can pull the right pieces together to win. My version is toned down a bit but should be good for most metas.

There are some commanders that would like scapeshift if you want to play it. Lord Windgrace , Omnath, Locus of Rage , and The Gitrog Monster . All of which are strong decks, Gitrog can even be a competitive deck.

If you like combo control, i have a list that can please you. Here it is:

http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/kess-storm-of-doom-budget-edh/

It is a Grixis storm/doomsday combo deck with a little bit of control around it. The deck is not too costy, but you can easily upgrade the mana base, I hope this comment helped:) have a nice day!

Zacama, Primal Calamity can be built this way and at this budget. Just ramp like hell and win with infinite mana and etb-triggers or a giant fireball.

Also Wort, the Raidmother is pretty budget to build and wins with a big x-damage spell copied or searches up purphoros, avanger of zendicar and chancellor of the forge to kill the whole table

Thank you all for the suggestions! I appreciate all of you! I still haven’t settled on a commander but you’ve helped me narrow it down!

In blue/red you have the Niv-Mizzets ( Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind , Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius , and Niv-Mizzet, Parun ), The Locust God , Melek, Izzet Paragon , Mizzix of the Izmagnus ...

If you want combo, that's the place to go. However, if you want a lil more control, esper is by far my favorite color for that! Aminatou, the Fateshifter , controlling your topdecks, blinking your things- there are a lot of fun interactions with this fellow. If you're willing to put the money down, Sen Triplets can be a wicked commander as well, and can be played very politically.
