Help me choose a non-legendary to build around.

Commander Deck Help forum

So Im thinking of making a deck with a tutor in the command zone. Either Sidisi, Undead Vizier or Momir Vig, Simic Visionary unless someone else knows of a good non-Maralen of the Mornsong alternative.

Then I need to choose a card to build around... Sidisi limits me to black and artifacts but I could have fun building around Paradox Engine, Isochron Scepter, or even Necropotence.

Momir limits me to creatures but in better colors to protect my permanents.

Thoughts?

I did something similar a while back with Sliver Overlord and Conspiracy. It was fun, but after it evolved into a toolbox deck that consistently won on T3, I decided to revamp it to something else.

Other than something janky like that, most other tutor commanders are extremely good and when built right are generally T1-T2 decks, depending on playgroups.

I recommend a fun thing of Kaho, Minamo Historian and focus on Training Grounds. Add in a Clever Impersonator, Copy Enchantment, and the like to make his instants cost virtually nothing. Having him tutor up a Turnabout, Intellectual Offering, and Essence Flux for an infinite mana and draw.

A lot of people build around Palinchron, or Deadeye Navigator, or Laboratory Maniac, etc etc. Just combo pieces in general

Speaking of general; General Tazri is another tutor commander that can track down wincons

I'm building 4c Thrasios, Triton Hero+Vial Smasher the Fierce and some of my main wincons include Paradox Engine and Isochron Scepter

In green, some fun creature tutors to build around are Call of the Wild, Game Preserve, and Zoologist. Pick a commander you can scry with, and in green you have options like Sylvan Library and Mirri's Guile to help set your library, as well. The Call and Zoologist would probably get targeted, but the Preserve is more group hug, and might stick around. If you run it with a green/blue commander, there would surely be blue spells to protect those cards, and bring out your fatties for all to see. Momir Vig, Simic Visionary would be a good one for those cards.

Momir Vig, Simic Visionary if the deck is allll creatures (or at least permanents), Primal Surge for the insta-win.

I would have fun with a tutor deck building around a totally wacky card, like kinda a chaos-type deal. Endless Whispers comes to mind (I have a casual modern deck built around it, which makes for some awesome deckbuilding challenges), as does Midnight Oil, Heartless Summoning, Blood Funnel (zombie control tribal???), Curse of Misfortunes. Or at least that's the direction I would take it, instead of going for a very slow grindy board lock with competitive cards. In any case, I'd suggest Conjurer's Closet for Sidisi. And also, if you are tutoring, you can have fun win cons and "competitive" board locks alike, and just change which one you tutor for based on your playgroup. Good luck.

I've been tinkering around with (no pun intended) Arcum Dagsson Lantern control, where Arcum tutors up Lantern of Insight, Pyxis of Pandemonium, Codex Shredder, and Ensnaring Bridge to build a typical board state of that quirkily competitive modern deck.

Yisan, the Wanderer Bard is my favorite tutor commander

Another card I enjoyed in blue/green was Soothsaying. Especially if you use obscene mana ramp to set up your library. Run it with Kruphix, God of Horizons, to build up mana, and for more classic blue combo action, run a Palinchron, or any of the other untappers, Deadeye Navigator and a Gaea's Cradle, and you could order your entire library however you wanted to. Cast a Stroke of Genius in there early for all kinds of win options.
