Grenzo, Dungeon Warden Goblin Tribal

Commander Deck Help forum

So I had an itching for a goblin tribal deck. My first thought was Krenko but I run Purphoros who is essentially the same deck but more "equal opportunity" in regards to the tokens and critters. Wort, Boggart Auntie is being used by someone else in my meta who has given me the okay to run my own goblin tribal (and it's few and far between that he uses her).

So I looked at several different generals like Shattergang Bros, Alesha, Zurgo and I landed on Grenzo. He seems very doable with a tribal shell. Goblins buff other goblins and when run with Mana Echoes and Grenzo in play you can spit out your entire deck. Likewise with Skirk Prospector and/or Ashnod's Altar with Krenko. Most goblins have 2 or less power which means a T2-3 Grenzo is perfectly fine. The majority of the deck would have to be goblins and tutors for Mana Echoes and or Doomsday. This means though that to remain consistent a large chunk of the deck has to be creatures. So bottom deck stacking cards might be limited.

I plan on running the Doomsday combo as a wincon and for flavor. Nothing says goblin more than something called Doomsday. To deter board wipes Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat, maybe Boggart Shenanigans can make some think twice. If a wipe happens Living Death, Patriarch's Bidding, Wort, Boggart Auntie and even Balthor the Defiled can bring them all back. These also work well with Goblin Bombardment and/or Impact Tremors.

Another combo with Grenzo is Metallic Mimic and Murderous Redcap with one of the plethora of sac outlets available. Can double as an infinite mana generator as well with Mana Echoes, Ashnod's Altar, and Skirk Prospector. But that's a side note bc the infinite damage loop wins you the game.

Lastly, if all else fails there's always the horde of goblins at the ready to attack with. Like I said earlier, non-creature support has to be limited. Coat of Arms and Cover of Darkness would be all I'd run.

I'd just like to hear your guy's opinion about this route. Any advice would be good, even if it's to tell me this is a terrible idea or perhaps point me to a better general.

Seems a pretty solid idea. What doomsday stacks are you intending to make?

I played grenzo for awhile before switching to Wort, Boggart Auntie. I didn't try the doomsday route but had the mana combos such as Nim Deathmantle, Mana Echoes etc. In my play I found myself winning more often than not through straight goblin aggro, which in truth I find more satisfying than combo anyway. So long story short, I think Goblin tribal can really do well on its own under any commander. Grenzo will tempt you with good stuff and in truth there's no reason not to go good stuff under him (would you rather flip a Skirk Prospector or Herald of Leshrac?). That was just my opinion of him anyway, the deck still won a good bit so it's viable once you get the essential goblins.

I might opt to not run the Doomsday combo though. Still in the air about it. Just seems like I have to implement non-goblins to make it work. Metallic Mimic + Murderous Redcap I have no quarrels about. It would free up space for tutors, library stacking or goblin support. Grenzo is nice bc he can give goblins pseudo-haste and can cheat them out. Might not be as explosive as Krenko but more consistent. Grenzo also has the potential to become a big beat stick as well. Once Mana Echoes comes out the goblins will just pour out of their little hovels. I think he will be different from Purphoros at the very least.

This is what I had in mind. This is the non-Doomsday version.
