Found some commanders to play...but which one do I play

Commander Deck Help forum

Posted on May 30, 2017, 2:47 a.m. by Poptartz95

I have been wanting to build another EDH deck, and I have been torn between some of these commanders for awhile now. Just throw me your opinion of what I should play, and what type of deck you would play with that commander, and why! Thank you!

Sigarda, Host of Herons

Gisela, Blade of Goldnight

Tariel, Reckoner of Souls

Hanna, Ship's Navigator

or just wait for the new commanders in august, and save up to build a nice deck with one of the new commanders?

Sigarda is a pain the ass to kill :)

I would go for Hanna, because you can do anything in UW, best would be a heavy control strategy. It probably depends on your budget and the meta you play in though...in some playgroups a commander that is just "hard to kill" will do the job.

Gisela sort of belongs as a helpful card in a commander deck, not a commander. Hanna is strong but vulnerable. I think Sigarda is the way to go.

it really depends on your meta, as well as what you like to play. Gisela for one is a very voltron deck, basically you want to ramp to gisela, then give her equipments like swords and whatever, and smash face for tons of damage. Sigarda doesn't really have her own strategy, she is just one of the stock selesnya commanders. not to say that she is bad, she is a pain, but you need your own plan of how the deck will go. Ariel is very meta-dependent. I would just as soon play Alesha, Who Smiles at Death because it's more consistent. Hanna looks fun, with recurring one-drop artifacts and stuff. I Think that you should go with what suits you best. look on edhrec.com to help find sample deck lists.

I think both Gisela, Blade of Goldnight and Tariel, Reckoner of Souls are strong. My main concern with them is that they cost so much, and I doubt you can play them a second time, let alone a 3rd time. If you have alternative commanders in those colors they are of course an auto-include in the 99.

Sigarda, Host of Herons is solid because it has inbuilt protection. I would make a voltron deck around her, because she has hexproof and counters one of the biggest downsides of voltron: "sac a creature".

Nami looks very fun and can come down early for some shenanigans when your opponents are not ready yet.

I would vote for either Sigarda, Host of Herons or Hanna, Ship's Navigator, the choice depends of your preference in playstyle.

Depends on your type of play really. Though for fun and casual play (and surprise factor): Tariel

If you want to play the best commander of the 4, Sigarda is your girl.

Imagine a WG enchantress engine, supporting a Voltron strategy (ie: you put a tonne of Auras on Sigarda, draw lots of cards from the enchantresses, and hit really hard). As someone who has been on the receiving end of that deck, words cannot express how crazy the deck gets.

If you're looking for fun, play Tariel (although Alesha is definitely better).

I honestly haven't seen Hanna though so I'm not sure how she stacks against Sigarda.

I built a very powerful Selesnya deck (White/Green) which is on Tappedout with Sigarda as the Commander. Since she is already Hexproof, adding a few cards that will also make her Indestructible will serve as an awesome foundation for building a deck around her. ANSWER: Sigarda by far. Feel free to look up my deck "Growth and Protection for All".

First of all, logic would dictate that you should wait until August to buy any decks. Then you can compare with the new folks and pick your favorite.

Personally, I find Voltron to be a too-linear strategy. Yes, it works, but it gets boring to me after game 1. Sigarda isn't great if you feel the same way.

Gisela makes a wonderful Commander for Boros for any strategy, not just Voltron. Check out my list @ One-Punch Woman (Primer) for a list utilizing control and ramp and aggro to keep up pressure until Gisela sticks. Then, you pretty much win the next turn.

Hanna makes a good control Commander, while Tariel is awesome for casual play and chaos. So, depends on your budget, preferred playstyle, and desired competitiveness. Mention me if I can help any more!

I like the W/G guild the most. But I'm a huge fan of what Black can do to I'm torn between Tariel, Reckoner of Souls and Sigarda, Host of Herons I would say. Tariel, Reckoner of Souls cause I really like that she can fly in for damage. Then block then tap for her ability all without any added tricks.

I'd play Hanna! She seems like a fun control commander

Between these options, Hanna is by far the strongest/competitive! She is an excellent commander for combo/control variants so she is really my kind of girl. Also, look at that art! WOW!!!

Then I'd go with Sigarda. A very strong voltron build, all she needs is some indestructibility and the occasional flicker effect. The swords that make her truly viable are a tad expensive though...

Gisela would be the third in line for me. She is red/white which means a lot of trouble for me (difficult to ramp, tutor and/or draw cards). That said, Heartless Hidetsugu is a match made in heaven for her and the deck I'd build would revolve around such synergies: a group slug variant, if you will.

I wouldn't build Tariel... Mardu colours are decent, but her high cmc for average stats and randomness of her ability make her appeal less to me. If i'd build around her, i'd try to remove the random part of her ability by manipulating graveyards in such a way as to be able to get the creature i want/need at any given time. Hand disruption, spot removal and reanimator...

For a non-competitive table, I'd build a simple and interactive Hanna deck, followed by Gisela because working multiplication effects is always hilarious!

I have to say the randomness of Tariel and the removal suite available to Mardu would be my main reason to play her as my first choice.

Hanna has many directions to go as a recursion engine for artifacts and enchantments. My buddy plays her, and aside from our suspicions of him cheating cough cough first turn Sol Ring cough his deck ramps like crazy and does ridiculous things. She has so much flexibilty.

Gisela is one of the MVPs of my Mayael the Anima deck. Ive had her and Warstorm Surge out to wonderful effect. As the commander though, the ramp package and draw package available to RW will make her pretty narrow and while you can mix up the sources of damage the goal is still just that, abuse the double damage.

Sigarda is my least favourite option. She is probably the strongest because she's hard to get rid of, but she is pretty linear. Cast her, suit her up, swing. One-punching people is fun once in awhile, my buddy's Bruna deck does that but it's kind of a one-trick pony.

I'm biased because Red and White are my favorite, but either Gisela, Blade of Goldnight or Tariel, Reckoner of Souls would be my picks. Even in the 99 both of these angels are sweet, Gisela usually nets me at least one kill in my Iroas deck. In all honesty though, I would wait for August and see if any of the new decks jump out at you (The spoilers for the Dragon deck look sweet)

Thanks for all the help, and I think my plan is to go with a Sigarda, Host of Herons, and then work towards a new deck with the new Commanders in august. I haven't messed with green much outside of a old Mayael the Anima deck, and I use to rock a Gisela, Blade of Goldnight deck so I think we are going with Sigarda, Host of Herons thanks guys! :D

Sigarda, Host of Herons is a really sweet voltron style deck. By-far the most powerful strategy is Enchantment based Voltron, with Karametra, God of Harvests for ramp and Sram, Senior Edificer, Mesa Enchantress and thier enchantress friends for draw. Throw in some swords and BAM! powerful voltron deck. that can turn into a crazy value engine. Going enchantments tends to be cheaper too. You can of course go any-which way with the deck, her effect really messes with any deck trying to abuse sacrificing.

Hanna, Ship's Navigator is a pretty awesome commander, letting you kinda play around with enchantments and artifacts as much as you want. Control/Pillowfort tends to be what you see, but I really like those "rube goldberg" style decks that have a ton of options for combos. Making her competitive is pretty easy, there are a lot of ways to customize the deck to your meta. Which is always great.

Obviously if these sound like things you would really enjoy, go ahead. The pre-cons aren't super expensive, and if you feel you will have fun, Have some fun.
