Edric or Rashmi? Which is More Fun?

Commander Deck Help forum

Aloha!

I have a need to go for a more tuned deck. My metas getting more cutthroat and I need to keep up. On my budget, the best way I've decided is Simic, using a lot of counters to keep the turn 5 wins at bay.

Problem is, I can't decide who should lead it. My two main choices are Rashmi, Eternities Crafter and Edric, Spymaster of Trest.

Edric is a bit of weenie deck, which I have no experience with in all honesty. He uses his trigger to draw tons of cards with small unblockable creatures. He is very strong, and I feel I could win a few games with him for sure, but I feel like he's very linear, and wouldn't be fun to play multiple times.

Rashmi on the otherhand is a bit more random (can't see myself affording a Top without making my wallet sad right now) and benefits from playing a draw go style which is somewhat interesting.

Any ideas or decklists?

Grain of salt since I'm not a competitive player, just been playing a long time.

Rashmi will be more fun if you don't mind some randomness or if you are a bit masochistic like me and actually enjoy not always knowing what will happen. He can play the game a little differently and you have more choices in building the deck than Edric has.

Edric is more consistent and will likely win more games but I tend to think of him as a "solved" commander. When actually building his deck there are not a lot of options and the options get considerably lessened by the competitiveness of the table.

Hm that makes sense. I do like brewing and I guess that a good edric list looks the same no matter what honestly.

Have any suggestions on a theme I should go for? Straight control is probably the best, but something like Flash a Tribal sounds fun too

Thrasios, Triton Hero + Kydele, Chosen of Kruphix are arguably the most competitive. When paired with any infinite mana it's gg. Not required. He's just a good mana dump

Edric, Spymaster of Trest is the most aggro? also Elves! I've never played him, but friends have. Very potent. Refills your hand between boardwipes lmao

Rashmi, Eternities Crafter feels like she leans towards a longer game plan. Any Counterspell cantrips right? Also an elf.

I play Rashmi with extra turn spells! It's an expensive version but it's fun. (On my profile)

Honestly simic can go any direction. All of the above provide some version of card advantage; so choose what works for you and your meta! :D

If you go with Rashmi you should definitely take advantage of the effect being the first spell each turn. If you have Leyline of Anticipation and Vedalken Orrery I would use them if not there are some cheaper but not as effective options such as Yeva, Nature's Herald and Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir.

Since this is for a more tuned meta control should be the focus of the deck but you might consider running Oona's Grace. Instant speed retrace could be alright. Maybe?

I'm not sure about how to finish the game it seems like every blue control deck uses Laboratory Maniac... Perhaps Metallurgic Summonings could find a spot?

If you are looking for a fun to pilot, highly competitive, and efficient simic control deck, I'd look into Momir Vig Hackball :)

It's an elves deck that has decent control elements from blue and powerful combo potential for explosive 1-turn kills :)

If that's not your kind of fun, I'd go for Rashmi. Her "randomness" is never bad as it's at least card advantage, and it can be abused with or without top. Crystal Ball is a card, so is Gilt-Leaf Seer. Scrying is no stranger to blue either, not with all it's index and brainstorm effects. Nope! That's covered! The problem with Rashmi is having enough mana and the ability to play at instant speed.

My two cents...

What do you mean Edric decks are built similar? that's just because people look at EDrec too much & the MTG community are all "birds of a feather". Edric can be outrageously fun, you just have to build with the thought in mind that his ability is parallel, FOR THE ENTIRE TABLE. Instead of building another one-sided, elfball, unblockable, time-walking Edric deck - take a look and build one that promotes everyone smashing each other for card draw. The ONE TRUE PATH to Edric greatness lies in the hunted cycle, Tempting Wurm, Hypergenesis, live a little so everyone else can die a little.
