EDH Help...Which is better? Jund or Temur

Commander Deck Help forum

So, I am looking to build a new EDH. Either Temur or Jund. Temur would have Surrak Dragonclaw or Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund as the respective Commanders. Opinions? I am an Aggro player. My two other decks are a Kaalia of the Vast and Sigarda, Host of Herons Voltron style deck

are you going for casual or competitive?

temur offers you counter spells and better ways to draw cards, with Cyclonic Rift and Blasphemous Act and other similar spells as your board wipes.

Jund offers you better spot removal and board wipes with less ability to draw cards, giving you Damnation and In Garruk's Wake and other similar cards as your board wipes.

I tend to favor temur because you get removal like Pongify and Curse of the Swine which tends to be good enough as the 3/3s and 2/2s generally won't be relevant through the game, while drawing cards and stopping threats from hitting play will be. In temur especially you have access to some really good counter spells like Counterflux and Voidslime, Prophet of Kruphix to keep your mana open and get you blockers after swinging out. It does tend to be more midrange than aggro, though, so if you're dedicated to being aggro you may prefer jund.

With jund you can play either Prossh, Skyraider of Kher or Shattergang Brothers. These options allow you to play reanimate, resource denial (Shattergang says if you don't play tokens you probably lose) or Dragon Tribal which is very strong even in Jund.

With Temur the only good commander imo is Riku of Two Reflections. The best strategy with Riku is pretty much the same as Sultai or Simic's best trick: Extra Turns.

If you use temur then for competitive use Animar, Soul of Elements and include a bunch of infinite combos and Aluren + Shrieking Drake and stuff like that.

This is strictly my opinion on the matter of course but here it goes.

I primarily play green. Almost all of my EDH decks have green in them. That being said I have played both the combinations of colors you are asking about.

If Karrthus is a potential commander my thought is that you are planning on building a sort of Dragon Tribal?

I think Jund works better as a Sac deck with Kresh personally. Karrthus can be fun if you build a combo around him to go for alpha strikes but Temur colors give you access to a lot more dig and draw to help you find your big guys faster. Not to mention I feel like Dragonclaw's abilities will be more useful in any "big creatures smash face" type deck helping to make sure they hit the board and then stay there with blue counterspells etc.

So really it depends on the goal of the deck. I can honestly say though that my Dragonclaw deck has been a blast to play. No combos or crazy stuff just went pure good stuff. I like decks where I love every card I play.

Oh if you play jund then use prossh because it goes infinite with Food Chain. Not to mention use Misthollow Griffin + Food Chain in animar if you want to.

klone13, my man! we think alike.

Relating to what the OP asked, RUG is the better color combination with access to better generals- Like Animar, Soul of Elements, Maelstrom Wanderer, and Riku of Two Reflections. I really only consider Prossh, Skyraider of Kher as a good Jund EDH general.

I have dragon tribal in temur colors with Intet, the Dreamer as my commander but will have Surrak in the 99. The top deck manipulation with blue is nice with Intet's ability to cheat out all sorts of fat things.

I have both a kresh deck and a Riku deck I love playing, Kresh the Bloodbraided can be really scary with cards like Mage Slayer and Kusari-Gama, but I honestly feel like I've had a lot more fun with my Riku deck playing casually with weird combos like Isochron Sceptor, Hive Mind, Eye of the Storm and Veilstone Amulet. I just like to cause a lot of chaos with that deck, and like others have said before karrthus feels more like a dragon tribal commander which if your gonna do I'd recommend Scion the Ur dragon

Animar also goes infinite just with Ancestral Statue, which can be tutored up with any number of green's creature tutors or blue's artifact tutors. Not that I approve of such degeneracy...
