What's the best way to build this commander? Ive made him multiple ways defender, slightly aggressive, treefolk, and each way in my specific playgroup his win percentage is very low.

There's no way to make Doran really amazing if your playgroup is competitive; he's a tier 3 commander and great for fun not for being cutthroat. That being said, I think treefolk is the way to go.

I agree. Doran is a lot of fun and in good colours but he is not good in a cutthroat meta. What do your friends play?

I went the control route with my deck. There are a lot of boardwipes and spot removal in those colors, as well as reanimation to help stick it out in the long games. Fell the Mighty, Elspeth, Sun's Champion, Maelstrom Pulse, Vindicate, etc

If it can't get out the gate early with stuff like Slagwurm Armor or Skeleton Key, then plan on grinding away until you win lol

For creatures; I've slowly moved away from treefolk and into goodstuff. What I find is that creatures with really incredible abilities are sometimes neutered by having low power, which is again offset by a higher toughness. Doran can capitalize on that fact. Just look at Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite and Dragonlord Dromoka

The treefolk route can absolutely work, I just wasn't feeling it for whatever reason. If you invest in all the treefolk staples they do feed off each other though

Here's a link to the deck if you'd like to check it out. I build it for my girlfriend who maybe plays once a month or three, so it's fairly simple but I do want her to kick our asses!

Above all, have fun! Cheers!
