Dimir Aristocrats Commander?

Commander Deck Help forum

Hey all.

I'm going for a aristocrats edh deck that has some control elements to it. I want it to be in dimir colors considering I just got a Polluted Delta and Watery Grave.

I was looking at both Vela the Night-Clad and Grimgrin, Corpse-Born, one being a sac outlet and one being a draining piece.

I'm in a casual/competitive meta, with decks like Krenko, Mob Boss and Lord Windgrace, at around 75% and would love to get some advice.

Well with aristocrats you want either reanimate on your commander, drain on your commander, or sac on your commander. You identified 2 great options already and I would add Gisa and Geralf for your consideration too. It does limit your options somewhat but you were probably looking at Gravecrawler anyways.

Of these free sac outlets are probably the easiest thing to get. has dozens of them. Reanimation is also printed a lot...

This leaves the drain effect as being the hardest to come by and Vela the Night-Clad only wants things to leave play. This interacts better with the blue side of your deck and still works with the black side too. Allowing board wipes like Evacuation or Damnation to kill your opponents.

Thanks for the response!

I’m kinda trying to stay away from straight up zombie Tribal, even though having something to reanimate every turn would be great. So maybe the siblings are out.

I do agree drain may be the hardest to achieve. Reanimation and sac outlets are plentiful. I’m just scared a bit that vela is a little slow. She is 6 mana in Dimir colors, a guild not known for ramp. Then again my other options are 5 mana, so it’s not TOO far off.

I am doing Vela edh deck with an aristocratic theme along with ninjas, cause everything is better with ninjas. Still in very early stage of building. But pulled a Phyrexian Altar and Bitterblossom from ultimate masters which are going to find slots in the deck. Already had watery grave and polluted delta for the deck, and had vela in binder when my zombies deck added white to its color identity. So I decided to do vela for my dimir deck.

Hey, for a Dimir Commander consider the The Scarab God?

Combine the aristocrat strategy and reanimation? You don't have to play Zombie tribal with Scarab, value creatures are just as good. Get value from creatures when they ETB, when you sac them with sac outlets and when they are reanimated.

Creatures such as: Mulldrifter, Baleful Strix, Hostage Taker, Plaguecrafter, Champion of Wits, Clever Impersonator, Phyrexian Metamorph, etc. Can still include Zombies: Carrion Feeder, Cryptbreaker, Gravecrawler, Sidisi, Undead Vizier, Fleshbag Marauder. Consecrated Sphinx, Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur and Razaketh, the Foulblooded are great creatures with Buried Alive or Windfall and reanimation. Sheoldred, Whispering One is also a good reanimation target, at reanimating one of your value creatures each turn.

@pskinn01

I think Vela is the best option. I just put a decklist together for it as well!

[Dimir Aristocrats] (Budget)

Do you have a list I can kinda look over?

@multimedia

I have, and he was my original commander for this deck. 2 or 3 things made me remove him however.

  1. Exiling the creatures: That puts a damper on reanimating things like Gary for the future, and I would like to reanimate cards like Peregrine Drake multiple times.

  2. He's a target: In my meta, there is another Scarab God deck, and it's very prevalent. Even though my deck wouldn't be zombie tribal, it would still attract a lot of attention.

  3. He seems a bit figured out: I like decks that are kinda niche and un-explored. I figured that building Scarab like this would be ... sub-optimal compared to other decks that aren't as explored (ex. Grimgrin and Vela). I might be wrong on this though, and being proven wrong wouldn't bother me at all.
