Dead Guy Ale

Commander Deck Help forum

Ever since quarantine I have had nothing else better to do other than eat, work, sleep, repeat. One day, while laying down my futon, I brandished my foil Tymna the Weaver and stared at for God-knows-how-long. After that, an idea donned on me that I have yet to see others: Dead Guy Ale.

Deadguy Ale is an Orzhov or BW midrange deck with a pretty low mana curve, and lots of removal and answers for whatever your opponent drops onto the battlefield.

Most versions feature some discard (or other disruption) and land destruction, alongside Dark Ritual and effective creatures. The creature suite is usually all about bang-for-your-buck, with cheap-ish casting costs and timely abilities (that usually complement the disruption).

Long story short I thought a Deadguy Ale deck in EDH would be a fantastic idea, as Tymna alone is a very effective creature with a timely ability, and she might as well be a my commamnder for this rogue brew. In an EDH variant, my main idea behind this brew is to play lots of removal and answers for whatever your opponent drops onto the battlefield, in addition to land destruction, and effective creatures with timely abilities. Dead Guy Ale, hence the name.

Please give me your honest opinions, cards suggestions, any to kickstart my neurons!

Behind the Scenes for lots of low power creatures

I am not a big commander player so take this with a grain of salt. I don't think a low costing deck could cast enough impactful spells to combat multiple players. This also comes with the political risk of being teamed up on easily. To get around this you would probably have to work up the mana curve a bit and that seems to go against the idea behind the deck. I don't really know what to suggest to help you. Unless you are intending this for 1v1 commander and that might be more workable.

psionictemplar - Not to worry, my fellow wizard. I am well aware of that one major factor, and is not low-costing deck. The main idea behind this brew is to play lots of removal and answers for whatever your opponent drops onto the battlefield, in addition to land destruction, and effective creatures with timely abilities. Dead Guy Ale, hence the name.

For EDH I would recommend taking a look at some Edric, Spymaster of Trest decks as this basically plays in a simliar style to what you're wanting to do. Lots of card advantage and removal to keep getting your value through.

The big benefit of Edric over Tymna is that edric has a win condition in chaining multiple turns. You would want to find something similar (not neccessarily multiple turns, you're in black/white after all, but some sort of "combo") to make sure you can actually close the game out and not just fizzle with your beaters, but I'm sure it is possible.

Not sure how competitive you're going though.

enpc - This brew is not meant for competitive play, just a fun gimmick for people to enjoy. I do plan on having a combo backup plan in just in case, so I will look into that as well. Thank you for your time and suggestions. :3

The issue with playing a lot of spot removal in edh is it's pretty much card disadvantage

shadow63 While I agree with that for battlecruiser metas, when played vs competitive decks and used only when absolutely needed, spot removal is fantastic.

How I love this game of tug of war~! shadow63 does bring a strong point about spot removal; if my deck deluge with spot removal it could dilute my overall game plan. I'll have to consider just how much card draw to incorporate in my spell pile.

GhostChieftain - Every deck does need some spot removal. In my spell sweet, I am considering between 24-28 spells in all..

As long as you're running a good slew of creatures with evasion so that you can keep drawing up to 3 cards a turn off Tymna, going heavy on single target removal isn't a bad thing.

While it would disable skulk a bit, you could also look at partnering Tymna with Ravos, Soultender to help connect damage as well as take advantage of stuff like Attrition and Teysa, Orzhov Scion as repeatable removal effects.

I am working on the abzan equivalent of this list. It uses Sidar Kondo of Jamuraa to utilize cheap threats such as Mindblade Render or Oakhame Adversary for card advantage, while utilizing Green's addition of a few valuable pieces of removal, such as Abrupt Decay and Assassin's Trophy.

The current Legacy version often uses a mix of Sevinne's Reclamation, Lingering Souls, Dark Confidant, and Stoneforge Mystic style finishes, almost all of which fit well in this strategy. Umezawa's Jitte would just end games!
