Creatureless Commander?

Commander Deck Help forum

Posted on Aug. 3, 2016, 4:22 a.m. by djskype

Ive been wanting to make a creatureless EDH deck thats not a super friends deck. I would prefer to have it no creatures of course other than my commander. any suggestions on commanders or colors?

I am thinking maybe a Black/Red/White commander.

I have a 60 card creatureless Black deck that utilizes cards that drain life and kills creatures. i can take part of that in my edh deckBlood Tithe, Exsanguinate, Consume Spirit and the white and black one that drains x2 off everyone. also creature hate enchantments like Tainted AEther, and Lethal Vapors and No Mercy that would be great.

I can use Bubbling Muck in conjoined with Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth + Cabal Coffers, Dark Ritual and the few other red mana ramp cards for added mana ramp. Also cards like Painful Quandary and Wound Reflection for extra damage

I can use red for burn, doubling damage, forking spells and playing cards like Havoc Festival.

White can play Ghostly Prison, Sphere of Safety and Elesh Norns Annex. Black also has a pillow fort card Koskun Falls.

Of course many wrath cards too in all 3 colors.

I guess my win con would be to ramp up and drain life/burns people to death while hiding in my pillow fort.

Ideas? Comments?

Zurgo Helmsmasher wrath-tribal, this deck can be really oppressive if built right. Just play Jokulhaups-style cards and start look for a new playgroup.

Talrand, The Sky Summoner. 38 Islands. 50 Counterspells. 10 Blue Sun's Zenith to keep your hand full. Elixir of Immortality and Psychic Spiral to keep your library full. If you feel the need, add some bird/flying tribal pumps or blue wipes (like Cyclonic Rift).

If playing two headed giant, replace the 10 draw spells with 10 unblockable spells (like Aqueous Form).

Mono-Blue would probably be your best go for creatureless, with Talrand, The Sky Summoner as mentionned above. But in the colors you mentionned, Zurgo Helmsmasher would be a blast if played correctly.

Narset, Enlightened Master
Zur the Enchanter
Zurgo Helmsmasher
Uril, the Miststalker
Mizzix of the Izmagnus

Those are the ones that come to the top of my head. The first four tend to turn into a pseudo-voltron build, but don't have to

I run a creatureless Narset build and it is fun, but challenging (which is what I wanted). I have an Animar, Soul of Elements deck with ~50 creatures and other creature based decks so I wanted to try something new

The challenge is that if your opponents can keep your commander off of your battlefield it's kinda hard to win. Be ready for Mind Control effects, Counterspells, Nevermore, etc

Essential cards include Cavern of Souls, Homeward Path, and equipment to keep opponents from targeting your commander

I also run manlands like Needle Spires in case I can get extra beats in or need a blocker.

mana symbol w/mana symbol u/x will give you the most pillowfort options to stave off attackers. Also Counterspells. Just be ready for people messing w your commander!

I run a creature less Tromokratis voltron deck. Very fun to play.

You fill the deck with cards like Propaganda, Web of Inertia, and War Tax to protect yourself early game.

You use cards like Evacuation, Whelming Wave, and Cyclonic Rift to protect yourself mid game.

and you use crazy equipment like Infiltration Lens and Fireshrieker to attack and tap cards like Mind Games if you want to go for the kill.

I would like it to have no other creatures other than my commander. Not even creating tokens of creatures. I could also play Jeleva as my commander and have high casting burn cards (if there are enough of them) and play copy spells like fork and twincast to copy said spells to win that way.

Also i want to stay away from Vultron as i dont want to win from attacking. Zurgo might be an option as i can equip assault suit on it and I wont be the one attacking but my main way to win i want to be burn and drain spells.

Alternatively I could have a 5 color commander like Cromat and just have 4 colors in the deck. White and blue for pillow fort and black and red for damage and drain. plus all 4 have some sort of board wipes and blue and red and copy spells

Mizzix of the Izmagnus

Has burn and drain, and can combo off.

Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge has even more burn and drain.

Talrand can go zero creatures on a budget and beat 1000 dollar decks

Geth, Lord of the Vault mono black control

Since you want it to be creature less, and you really don't want tokens either, just steal the opponent's creatures.

Sen Triplets.

Pillow fort, control, card draw, tutors, plus lots of combo opportunity alongside knowing/using what's in your opponents hand!

Isochron Scepter + Orim's Chant and Helm of Obedience + Rest in Peace are two I run in my Zur deck. You can also put Energy Field out with Rest in Peace.

Then play spells that drain or cause life lose. Like Debt to the Deathless and Exsanguinate. Then there is also pinger stuff like Underworld Dreams.

Burn has a hard time in commander bro.

Zurgo, creatureless

Look I was so bored at work I made you a draft of a oppressive Zurgo deck, my friend used to play something similar, I just made it more oppressive (and a lot more expensive). This deck will make your opponents cry.

No one's mentioned the Proteus Staff trick yet?

Use it on your commander in a creatureless deck, it'll flip your deck and spit your commander back onto the field, then you'll get to stack your library however you want.

It's legalized cheating.
