Can Krenko...?

Hang with commanders like Kaalia and such?I have a thing for goblins from watching the old 1977 hobbit cartoon and really like the old MTG card art for goblin tribal stuff. So I was thinking of making a goblin edh deck but wasn't sure if krenko is still a viable commander...

There are some drawbacks to his one-dimensional strategy, but it's really fun to watch him spiral out of control. Definitely a powerful commander, and the fastest of any of my decks.

Mono red is usually at a disadvantage at the table, but Krenko is a really viable commander, if one-dimensional. Between the low curve of goblins and the power of cards like Impact Tremors and Purphoros, God of the Forge while he is out, you can definitely win out of nowhere with him pretty easily.

Krenko can easily hang with Kaalia. They can both be built as "oops you're dead!" decks, and Krenko is definitely much more effective at killing a whole table.
Build for combo, not for aggro. Aggro Krenko will lose to a sweeper long before it can win at any reasonable table.

Wort, Boggart Auntie is a really strong goblin general too, probably better overall because of the tutors and removal.

I feel that Krenko does better with Purphoros, God of the Forge as the Commander.
Krenko is more easily gotten out of the deck, and they are a match made in heaven. The deck can be ran as Goblin Tribal to much success.

I second what IAzire said Purphoros is just better and does the same things. MTG goldfish has a budget purphoros list that I've used and it can easily wipe tables. It basically does the same thing as krenko just better. But it's ultimatly up to you.

Almost any commander can be competitive. Krenko definitely has what it takes.

Krenko + Thornbite Staff + a couple goblins and Goblin Bombardment is game..

I will second Purphoros, and he can be run as purely goblin tribal without much drawback. I run him not necessarily goblin tribal but very close. Krenko can easily swap out with Purph as the commander depending on how you feel. I generally use the gobs as chump blockers and/or fodder for Skirk Prospector and the like. Running gobs will also allow you more tutors that red lacks. Sometimes I attack to get extra damage in.

krenko can be explosive, he was my first commander and i love him to this day, that said, i recently upgraded to Wort, the Raidmother since my krenko deck has been completed and tuned for several years now, and tapping him and winning can bore your playgroup in high doses. i upgraded to wort for the color splash, so that i could run busted cards like Food Chain, Doubling Season, Gaea's Cradle and Craterhoof Behemoth, and personally i would say wort is a strict upgrade in power level, although the spell subtheme makes the deck play a bit different.
i too love goblins, hence my name, but mono red is very restrictive in edh, if i were you i would work towards either Wort, the Raidmother, Grenzo, Dungeon Warden or even Shattergang Brothers, as wort and shattergang can include the above green cards as well as tons of budget green spells, while grenzo and shattergang gain access to powerful, game winning spells like Doomsday, Necropotence, Vampiric Tutor and Demonic Tutor
krenko can still explode but he relies very heavily on enablers such as Thousand-Year Elixir or Hammer of Purphoros to give him haste and untap him multiple times

Using the tier commander list [List - Multiplayer] EDH Generals by Tier both Krenko and Kaalia are considered tier 3 generals. In other words yes, Krenko will do just fine against her. Being mono red however, Krenko will rely on speed and "zerging" the table. He tends to run out of gas due to red's lack of card draw. Things like Slate of Ancestry, Wheel of Fortune, Reforge the Soul ect. will be extremely useful.
