Can Banding work in EDH?

Commander Deck Help forum

I recently went on and tried to make a deck focused on the Banding mechanic as a way to reverse the power creep that I saw developping in my playgroup and in my own playstyle. The problem is, surpringly (huge sarcasm here), it is near unplayable, hence why I came here to seek help from the best of Magic players.

So, if you have any experience in commander, especially with weenie decks, feel free to drop by and help me confuse some more people with mechanics that would have been better left untouched!

Note to self. Help here.

Yes banding can work. Im surprised you didnt go with the only banding commander, Ayesha Tanaka

You could also use Soraya the Falconer for birds and banding. Get some white equipment utility and some swords and you're swinging in with massive amounts of damage from your banded flock of birds.

chaosumbreon87: I did know she existed, but I thought her benefits to the strategy were very minimal. Plus, I felt like green could add more interesting cards like Lure effects that would fit nicely with a more combat oriented strategy.

Livingham: I originally went with that strategy, but ended up with a generic monowhite voltron build. Therefore, I tried to add another color to spice things up a little.

But you forgot the few things blue adds to EDH which makes it feared a little more than green:

Control- specifically sorcery speed counterspells are fun but counters and control is fun. Mystic Denial, Extinguish, Preemptive Strike specifically.

Draw power-blue has almost a monopoly on draw power and deck management. Just saying. It offers a lot more than green for this department.

Phasing- Yeah. this old mechanic. People hate it. Judges hate it. What can be funnier than banding to a man land, than phasing out the banded man land.

Lastly, going wide with creatures is often worse in commander since board wipes hurt a lot more. Blue lets you recover a lot more easily but the surprise is less when your commander has that mechanic written on it.

Just my $0.02 though.

I do mostly agree with your propositions. However, I fear that by going the control way, it might dilute the flavor of the deck, which I want rather combat oriented.

As for the phasing, I already have a deck focused specifically on that mechanic using Taniwha, so I might pass on it.

Finally, one of my concern is actually the deck's resilience following a boardwipe, which I adressed on the deck's page.
