Budget Nylea ideas

Commander Deck Help forum

I'm trying to get a friend into EDH and was talking commanders with him. He was drawn to Nylea, God of the Hunt because "I like green" which seems like pretty sound reasoning to me.

So, I want to come up with some budget ideas for this so the cost of entry isn't too high. I don't feel like mono-green goodstuff is the way to go so themes are important.

Ramping into fatties seems like the obvious way to go, but Nylea's activated ability seems interesting too. Creatures that give some sort of bonus based on how much damage they do seems like something to explore.

I had thought about a sort of "counters matter" subtheme with hydras and stuff like that, maybe some proliferate, some mono-colored graft/evolve stuff (which opens the possibility of switching to a Simic commander later), a few things from Tarkir that care about counters, etc. I have a bunch of cards for that already.

The person I'd be helping to build this isn't a big fan of combos, but does like synergies and some control elements (not green's strong suit, but some artifact and enchantment hate is possible).

So, ideas would be awesome!

Nylea is kinda a goodstuffs commander, and not really that good in general IMHO. But if thats what the guy wants, yeah, a ton of ramp and big stompy guys is probably the way to go. Theres lots of nice green beaters for little cash and ramps cheap too. But honestly theres better support commanders for ramp-into-fattys deck, like Omnath, locust of mana for example.

I don't disagree, but I put Nylea out there because she is pretty straightforward. She doesn't offer any other clear direction, but in this case that may actually be beneficial because it means the deck can be changed up easily once we find a clear playstyle to tailor it to.

Omnath is a superior commander in most respects, but I'm working on something that will be fun and not too challenging for now.

what about using Yisan Chord (the creature not the deck i am having troubles linking that one) instead? Or if switching commanders isn't an option, try having an enchantments matter style deck. using things like Oath of the Ancient Wood and Eidolon of Blossoms

Hm... enchantments matter seems like a very good theme actually, I might run with that and it even fits the commander. As for Yisan, that does require remembering what CMC your creatures all are so you can get them when you need them. That can be challenging for less experienced players.

Thanks, I'll definitely explore that direction. With Theros rotating soon it shouldn't be too hard to get cards for it.

do a lot of stuff with deathtouch as it works GREAT with trample. personally I run a Heliod, God of the Sun commander deck and have a lot of fun with an easily recastable indestructible commander.

Bow of Nylea for the flavor win!

I'd just play huge green creatures; ramp up like crazy and play anything that'd benefit from getting trample, and anything that'd help devotion or protect her creatures. Spearbreaker Behemoth and Archetype of Endurance for example.

Lots of ramp to play big creatures sooner, like Kodama's Reach, Skyshroud Claim, Nature's Lore, Cultivate, Peregrination, and so on. Green is really good at this.

Thank you everyone. I've gone with the "enchantments matter" theme in addition to the obvious route of ramping into fatties. A lot of these ideas did help or are along the same lines I felt would be effective. I'm pleased with the current list:

Screw enchantments, run a "deathtouch matters" theme.

Also Engulfing Slagwurm becomes unblockable when you give it trample.

Oh, deathtouch will be in there too. Good call on the Slagwurm, I didn't even know that was a thing!

I made a Nylea deck based off of this conversation. Thought "why not?" and gave it a whirl. The deck I've come up with is fun, powerful, and not too crazy to pilot
