Board wipes.

Commander Deck Help forum

The mardu commander i'm building at the moment only has 1 board wipe, All Is Dust but i was wondering if there was a better one(s) i could use, or if i need one at all.

Who is the commander? What strategies are you relying on to win? Do creatures tend to stop you cold, or are they more of an annoyance or a delay than anything? What about artifacts? Enchantments? Lands? What wipes to suggest for your deck kind of heavily depends on that kind of thing.

My commander is Zurgo Helmsmasher, my deck is aggro, enchantments that stand out include Gift of Immortality and Spectra Ward, and i have several token cards like Army of the Damned and Mardu Ascendancy. I'm running 38 land.the lowest would be white, the highest would be black/red. So basically agro with cards that either send out creatures Flamerush Rider or cards that boost or put stuff on creatures Gift of Orzhova

In that case it sounds like your strategy would want ways to avoid board wipes (ex. Boros Charm), but I generally don't play EDH, so I could be wrong..

Typical boardwipes in RBW include Wrath of God, Damnation, Blasphemous Act, Rout, Terminus, Martial Coup, Planar Cleansing, I could probably list more.

Razia's Purification is always nice to have when you have Zurgo, Darksteel Plate, and a Worldslayer on the board. That way you can get around stuff like indestructibility.

Catastrophe

Crux of Fate

End Hostilities

Magus of the Disk

Nevinyrral's Disk

Magister of Worth

Merciless Eviction

But seriously black and white are the best colors for killing all the things. However if you are running creature based aggro i don't think it is a good idea to include any of them.

How has nobody mentioned Austere Command yet? It's insane. Like, I'd place it third, behind Merciless Eviction and Toxic Deluge.

Chandra's Ignition could work decently as a boardwipe if you've got Zurgo Helmsmasher out.

Slaughters anything that's less than 7 toughness (or higher, if you already have counters on him) and puts a shedload of +1/+1s on him before you swing.

Tragic Arrogance might do good work for you as well, from ORI

You could do all damage types too, Earthquake, Anger of the Gods, Inferno, Blasphemous Act. Combos with Boros Reckoner, Spitemare, Stuffydoll

Or a one sided overloaded Mizzium Mortars

I would not add any of the land destruction ones unless other members of your meta do so. land destruction is very much a janky out and no one likes that in a format that is supposed to be "casual".

That being said. Day of Judgment, Wrath of God, Life's Finale, Tragic Arrogance, Blasphemous Act, Chandra's Ignition, Austere Command, Phyrexian Rebirth, Rout, and Martial Coup are all great wipes. I would avoid ones that exile or tuck in large scale as they will hit zurgo himself. use more pinpointed removal for the creatures needing exiling.

I'll leave cards like World Slayer to you as you know the annoyance levels of your playgroup better than I.

Of course there is also Balance and... ugh there is an enchantment with a balance like effect that I can't remember. Equipoise! That's it.

There is also a white enchantment that destroys all enchantments... damn Brain Maggot

If you're going with a voltron strategy then Zurgo and boardwipes will get along just fine. Blow up everyone else's dudes and then have Zurgo punch them right in the face for commander damage. Most of the ones named here are excellent choices. But you don't want to play Terminus or Final Judgment when Zurgo is on the field.

Someone also mentioned Worldslayer. It pisses some people off, but it's actually a good choice for Zurgo.

If you're going with an aggro strategy that doesn't revolve around Zurgo though, you should be a bit more selective. Most sweepers will hurt you more than opponents. You might run spot removal instead. Or you could find ways to flicker your things, but then all the counters fall off your commander.

Oh, and Balance is banned in EDH.
