Best walker commander, not Atraxa

Commander Deck Help forum

So I wanna build a Planeswalker semi super-friends deck, but I'm avoiding Atraxa, both because she is pretty expensive as a commander, and also because I really don't want to use the stereotypical EDH general.

I was thinking:~Breya~Yidris~K&T~Maelstrom Wanderer

Though Open to other options, also I have not played with many partner commanders so IDK what combo could be good, maybe Vial Smasher and the Simic draw guy?

Trying to do Grixis plus green? I really like Nicol Bolas, but green feels needed.

Just a small update trying to figure out colors, for me Temur is a must, I know a lot of players think red is the weakest walker color, but some of the effects of Red and R/X(/X) walkers can be very nice, examples are:

~Sarkhan Unbroken + to draw and get 1 mana, - to get a 4/4 blocker

~Daretti, Scrap Savant +for Loot, and - can be ok if i end up running some useful artifacts and if some of mine get destroyed [swapping a Sad robot for a chain veil can be nice if it ends up in the grave]

~Dack Fayden +to loot, - to grab a nice artifact, maybe a mana rock or a dangerous creature that you can then use Daretti to sac.

~Ral Zarek +is a nice way to untap something like a mana rock or a creature or even the chain Veil - to ping something for damage

~Chandra, Flamecaller +is a nice way to try and hit someone, or if you have Teferi, Temporal Archmage Emblem then can be used as chump blocker, - is a hand cycler

[UGH, accidentally hit Post and cannot see any way to edit my last post, so continuing!]

~Chandra, Pyromaster mostly I combine her with top to use her 0 and know i can cast the card OR to burn away a card I do not need

~Nahiri, the Harbinger + is a loot and - is nice removal under the right conditions

~Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker If I cast him...he can be chaos, no ability he has is bad, but at 8...eh Also with God-Pharoah coming out, another nice red walker.

~Saheeli Rai Probably the weakest example of these walkers, but a + to scry and a - for an extra mana rock or Sad Robot can have it's uses.

~Finally the new Samut that is coming out is alright, but to be realistic she is a combo piece in the deck, dropping her after a doubling season seems to be the play here, so she can ult to grab 2 more walkers who can in turn ult. Her minus is meh and her plus is useless so debatable

I use Child of Alara: destroy everything right before your turn, then put 1-2 planeswalkers on an empty board.

Child of Alara, here's the deck!

Child of Alara is usually the go-to because it is a threat to hold over people trying to kill your walkers. However I know I personally built my superfriends to intentionally include no boardwipes (excluding those on Ugin and Elspeth which I rarely use anyway), so instead I went for Cromat. I don't cast him much, and when I do he doesn't usually accomplish much, but he's the least attention-drawing 5-color commander, and I felt 5 colors was necessary -- There are a few red walkers, as mentioned earlier, that are just too good to leave out, and white has Call the Gatewatch, Deploy the Gatewatch, and Enlightened Tutor to search Doubling Season. And of course green has that plus the best color fixing like Prismatic Omen and Oath of Nissa.

My money is on K&T as a sneaky political superfriends deck...you give everybody mana, draw everybody cards, earn good will with a walker or two, and then BAM board lock with Sphere of Safety or Magus of the Moat and a Jace ultimate or whatever. Rather than guaranteeing your walker safety through mechanics, do it through politics.

Kydele, Chosen of Kruphix and Vial Smasher? I don't think those would be good for a semisuperfriends deck. A "Super acquaintances" deck would be more appropriate but that's me rambling.

In all honesty, you can either go the route my friend has and make Progenitus as the commander or something else, like, Child of Alara. To be honest, getting an Atraxa, Preator's Voice would make things easier but you wouldn't get good old Bolas in there.

Of course, if you ask me, partner commanders for a glint-eye(RUBG), yore-teller(WUBR), ink-treader(WUGR), witch-maw(WUBG), or dune-brood(BRGW) decks aren't exactly easy to work around with superfriends. They don't have very much synergy. But hey, whichever works for you and I wish you the best of luck on your choices. :3

Yeah, I second the Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis vote. The walkers in those colours are powerful and versatile and can easily be protected in a pillowfort/group hug/enchantress build. I've seen an interesting loam/superfriends build with them as a general also.

If nothing else, the commander has quite a large ass to protect your walkers!

Personally I like Breya, she is removal, makes blockers and can be a easy wincon. I feel like not including green doesn't hurt that much, Doubling Season is cool but I'd rather have a combo piece in the command zone. I think Anointed Procession also gave the deck a nice boost.

I think Sliver Queen is a good superfriends commander, hear me out:

  • She can produce chump blockers

  • Access to all 5 colors

  • You can add some combos with her in addition to superfriends. You don't have to have a way to tutor for them.

If you don't want to use 5 colors, or you don't have the money for Sliver Queen, then I third K&T. You can also use Maelstrom Wanderer and Narset, Enlightened Master in the 99.

Narset, Enlightened Master is a HUGE superfriends enabler that can throw them out like crazy, While staying fairly safe. Though running creatures can get problematic, cause if you find your saving grace with her, too bad, she just exiled it. Which is why a lot of people run her as the commander and not a member of the 99.

Vorel of the Hull Clade with stuff like Mycosynth Lattice and Liquimetal Coating, there are a few things that can turn your superfriends into artifacts. to which Vorel can then double it. throw in doubling season on top of that BAM you got some scary shenanigans going on. Though no red.

Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder can be superfriends friendly, but you lose some of the safer Planeswalkers like Ajani and Gideon (the same can be said for vorel) Which is honestly pretty minor. Unlike Maelstrom Wanderer Yidris can use the golgari planewalkers, cascading from Garruk, Apex Predator into Vraska the Unseen. Both of which are killer EDH walkers. Though the contingent with Yidris is that you to do damage, which can be catch 22 and really isn't as easy as it seemed. Not to mention you can tend to win through commander damage, which is just kinda boring when you could be chaining fun superfriends shenanigans.

That was my 2 cents good luck, and happy deck building.

Yeah I might look into K&T, since, as much as I like the tutor and destruction black and it's walkers can bring, I really like the draw and other disruption red brings, and white has some better superfriends walkers as well.

Also to all those asking, I consider green a must for Superfriends not just because of Doubling season, but also because green has the ramp i need to really get going as well as some really good walkers with Garruk, Nissa, Kiora [master of depths for mana], Tamiyo Field Researcher, Ajani, and finally new Samut

Honestly the only raeson I wanted black for walkers is Nicol Bolas, such power much dragon :P
