Best Mill Commanders?

Commander Deck Help forum

Hey all.

Currently I'm running Mirko Vosk, Mind Drinker since I had one on me, but I can't decide if he's good enough. I know mill is NOT the best deck but it was my first deck I ever made back when I only played kitchen table and it has a special place in my heart. Any advice? I'm feeling not Phenax btw. He seems overplayed and fully explored.

I've always felt Oona, Queen of the Fae was underrated and Lazav, Dimir Mastermind might be fun

@shadow63

Thanks for the suggestions! I feel like Oona is more of a combo commander but Lazav is a definite thought!

The Mimeoplasm is a good one. Usually people go self mill or do something dumb with Hermit Druid but I recently threw together Mimeoplasm Just Millin' Around. The general idea being to mill everyone and occasionally cast mimeo whenever a good combination of creatures end up in graveyards.

Some others that benefit from mill or use mill (I have little to no experience with any of these):

Stitcher Geralf- annoy everyone all at once and usually get large tokens

The Scarab God- exile problem things like Kozilek, Butcher of Truth in response to the ability hitting the stack so the next time you mill out that person it is gone. Also you get the 4/4 version which is hilarious.

Lazav, Dimir Mastermind- no direct mill but able to do some funny stuff.

Wrexial, the Risen Deep- rather expensive and doesn't mill directly but benefits from it.

Circu, Dimir Lobotomist- A bit meh by himself with how little he gets but he won't be by himself. worth noting if he hits things like Sol Ring then no one gets to have the ring except you.

Szadek, Lord of Secrets- very similar to what you have now but more linear. You know how much you get with this guy where as your current one could whiff.

Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge- Likely to be one of the stronger ones. Cast every bodies stuff!

Find a better mechanic to monkey with IMO - throwing a ton of cards into your opponent(s) graveyard can often be helpful for your opponents. That and you are having to mill A LOT of cards and have a good chance of hitting an Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre or something similar.

That said if you really have your heart on trying to mill your way to victory you could try the ol' Tunnel Vision + Hinder trick. There are a few ways to accomplish this but its fast and lethal.

I enjoy Lazav, Dimir Mastermind... Although most of my meta doesn't play the kind of splashy creatures he would like to see in the graveyard.

But if your meta runs a lot of mill insurance like Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre then you get to have a 10/10 hexproof, indestructible titan. Which can be fun & is a reasonable tradeoff for them being able to shuffle the graveyard into the library.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I really wanna stay Dimir so looking at the ones you suggested the one that most interests me is Wrexial; I love playing instants and sorceries. Since I'm in that vain should I just go self mill and do something like Dralnu, Lich Lord? Maybe make it so everyone mills? xD

@kdmurphy001

I know its not the best but like I said it has sentimental value. After I got my first pack and pulled an Ashiok I KNEW I would like mill. That combo does seem hilarious I'll have to fit it in!

@Gleeock

Lazav does look cool I have to admit. Most of my meta isn't creature based though sadly.

In that case I really can't stress Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge enough, She fits perfectly and the red can give extra combats. But if you insist on dimir.

Dralnu, Lich Lord seems terrible to me with that downside. Unless you can get enough permanents I just see Blasphemous Act and friends ruining your day over and over... Just my opinion though if you can get him to work then cool. And Kess, Dissident Mage seems like a strict upgrade from Dralnu.

Wrexial, the Risen Deep can be pretty good, you'll use all the normal mill stuff like Trepanation Blade and Fleet Swallower. Expect to win more do to his damage rather than mill unless you pull some wicked spells off your opponents. Stormtide Leviathan, Spreading Seas, Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth and similar can make him rather terrifying. I would also have Lazav, Dimir Mastermind in the 99 because he is good and if your meta is too low on sorceries/instants you can switch them.

This site is a good place to start, though it is not all knowing:

https://edhrec.com/commanders/wrexial-the-risen-deep

This page is less mill oriented but potentially useful:

And here is pure gold for you:

@DrukenReaps

Thanks again for the comment!

You're probably right about Dralnu, so I guess I won't go down that route. And I would add red to the deck if I didn't already have 3 Grixis decks already lol. Kess does seem like a better version of Dralnu though so if I ever go that route I'll use her or Jeleva as my first options.

Also thanks for the EDHrec pages! I didn't know they had "themes" now (I might've not been on it for... awhile haha). Wrexial is definitely my best option right now. Well, that's not completely true. I've also been kinda mulling over Vela the Night-Clad mill as weird as it sounds. Focusing maybe on creatures that mill like Hedron Crab and she let's us have a finisher in some ways.

@DrukenReaps

I don't know I just kinda like Vela a lot and I like mill kinda a lot so maybe putting them together could be a fun pet deck? lol.

Nobody mentioned Ambassador Laquatus? Infinite mana and a little graveyard exile for Eldrazi titans is game.

January 27, 2018 9 a.m.

To me Oona, Queen of the Fae is the ultimate mill commander as well as a very strong control commander. The fact that she puts things in exile instead of the graveyard makes it so meren, karador, and mimeoplasm players don't get the benefit from you milling them. It also makes it so any eldrazi titan you remove from their deck is not just shuffling things back into their library.

I'm trying to stick to Dimir for Nostalgia reasons, but Ambassador may find his way into my 99.

luther

That is true, but not many people run the titans in my pod so I'm hesitant to play Oona since shes so well know to combo out.

Mindcrank, Sphinx's Tutelage and Consuming Aberration.

Also, all the cards that give Mirko double strike.

That is all.

An interesting, different choice would be Anafenza, the Foremost. Equipped with Trepanation Blade and aided by Keening Stone, you can exile a lot of threats before they hit your opponents' hands. Geth, Lord of the Vault and Balustrade Spy also would not be remiss.
