Best Control Colors/Commanders?

Commander Deck Help forum

I have thought about this so hard. I'm considering Cromat for coverage. I need to find a good control commander (preferably not grixis because there's a lot in my meta, though I like the idea of Crosis, the Purger). I just don't know what commander or colors to use.

Besides Thrasios and Tymna in my experience Tasigur, the Golden Fang is the best control commander.

I second the above, and would also like to add Oloro, Ageless Ascetic. I also have a decent control deck with Ishai and Thrasios.

Thanks guys. My only problem with Oloro, Ageless Ascetic is that I hear he draws a lot of hate. Really considering making this a partner deck; that never occurred to me.

Kruphix, God of Horizons and Keranos, God of Storms are low key super sweet control commanders. The blue/green and black/white partner commanders are taking the spotlight though.

I play both of these decks as control, Tactical Beauty can easily be turned full control using powerful ETBs and triggers to lock down more aggressive metas. Marath Says No controls resources but older versions of it leaned more heavily on removal and denial than this current anticombo version.

  • Do yourself a favor and don't do 5 color. You'll need more mana fixing cards which will dilute the deck.
  • If you want four color, Atraxa colors are best, but I would avoid 4 color for the same reasons above.
  • If you want three color, Esper has the best straight up removal & denial, but I find it to be so defensive that it's hard to actually develop an offense. Esper games will be long and grindy. For this reason, I like Bant and Sultai. The addition of green gives you more opportunity to actually pull off a win once you have control of the board.
  • If you want two color, you definitely want blue for countermagic & card advantage. For your second color I would go with either white or green. Both have great artifact/enchantment removal (one of blue's weaknesses) and good recursion. White will be more defensive with boardwipes and hatebears, while green will have more potential to play offense.
  • Don't do mono color because no matter what color you pick, it will have limitations without another color to cover it's weaknesses.

There are plenty of good options, if you want to go with a theft or artifact theme, Sen Triplets is good, if you want to go for more traditional control Grand Arbiter Augustin IV is amazing. If it is a creature heavy meta or decks that rely on there creatures or commanders, Merieke Ri Berit is heavenly. If you want to run Izzet, The Locust God is an excellent choice. My personal favorite is an esper color combination, as it allows you to combine the best control spells and spot removal, as well as board wipes.

Sen Triplets is ideal, if not for its price tag. Merieke Ri Berit is fun, but may be a little too abusive. I love esper, as well, though maybe witch is more my speed...

Grand Arbiter Augustin IV Hands down, lets be real, if you want to be real mean, you can play him stax with Winter Orb, Static Orb, Torpor Orb, Cursed Totem, Trinisphere which competetes with the competetitive tier 1 decks. If you want to be nicer, you play him pillowfort/goodstuff/Angel/Control, you can control, have a few pillowfort such as Propaganda, Sphere of Safety, aven mindsensor, some counterspells, throw in prisons.

I used to run him stax to compete with a doomsday zur and a doomsday yidris, but I made him back to casual control as I changed playgroup.

I may be a pinch bias =P, but I'd vote for Grand Arbiter Augustin IV myself.
