Best Colors for Voltron EDH?

Commander Deck Help forum

Posted on April 8, 2018, 7:17 p.m. by Tiny_Sir

Hello!

I'm currently trying to make a voltron deck (maybe with some board control elements? Idk I'm in the early stages) and can't decide on colors. I know white is essential for the equiptment and use of Sram, Senior Edificer, and I know sram is a very good commander I just want to keep my options open, but other than that I'm lost. Any help?

imo, you want RGW with Uril, the Miststalker as your commander. there are only a handful of commanders with hexproof (which its crucial your commander has hexproof so you're opponent doesnt blow it up along with all of your auras) and Uril makes himself bigger making it easier to win with commander damage.

My personal favorite voltron commander is Zur the Enchanter you can stack him full of lethal enchantments or build yourself a pillowfort and his low mana cost allows him to be cast easily multiple times per game. Ethereal Armor / Steel of the Godhead / Edge of Divinity

@buckeyetron

Hm while that's a good thought I was thinking more of an equiptment themed deck? Don't get me wrong, I think Uril is really cool, it's just Auras always seem flimsy to me.

as long as the creature has hexproof, aura's aren't really any more flimsy than equipment. they're also faster than equipment because you don't have to pay 2 separate costs. ideally, you should be running both anyway. with commander decks being 100 cards and only 1 copy per card, its unlikely you'll find enough good cards of either type to go "only equipment" or "only auras". auras can also have really powerful effects like Ethereal Armor or Daybreak Coronet.

in modern, "bogles" is a decently popular deck that focuses on hexproof creatures and loading them up with aura's. theres no equivalent deck for equipments, and probably won't be unless Stoneforge Mystic comes off the ban list.

Insert Rafiq of the Many Comment

Rafiq is very good. Akiri, Line-Slinger is pretty legit as well. Balan, Wandering Knight, Narset, Enlightened Master, and a lot of Boros commanders (although you'll struggle with ramp and draw) are decent.

Zurgo Helmsmasher is pretty fun. Very fast with the 3-turn clock built in. You get RW for the best equipment colors and you get draw from Black. I recommend a Sunforger package too because that's really strong in Mardu.

Yes you certainly need white in my opinion.

Also if you wanted an equipment focused deck I really love Sram, Senior Edificer for it. I see that you are interested in him already and speaking from someone who has played him over a year now he is really fun and performs well even without Hexproof. Also I have beaten many other Voltron commanders including Uril, Zur, Ojutai, Geist and others as well with Sram. They usually do not expect him to perform as well as he does. My other option would be Sigarda, Host of Herons. She is another one that is super fun and can perform well with equipment even though most build her with Auras. Her P/T along with Hexproof and Flying and also her anti-sac ability is great. Those are my two picks

Uril, the Miststalker, in my opinion at least, is the best Voltron commander. Stock Hexproof body and grows with every Aura attached to him. An old friend of mine dolphinsgrubb uses Uril and I must say it is a monster of a deck to play against.

Uril, the Miststalker is incredibly consistent as a voltron option, and is very difficult 1v1. Here is my version for comparison For Whom The Belle Tolls - An Enchanted Tale, as surprisingly there are a number of ways to construct the deck.

For a more multiplayer meta option, Rafiq of the Many is probably a better choice, as the addition of blue provides better answers in most situations.

Most importantly though, pick a commander that suits your color preferences and flavor, as youll simply have more fun that way.

I'm going to have to second the Zurgo Helmsmasher. A friend of mine runs him fairly budget and untuned and it is still a monster to deal with... Zurgo absolutely loves board wipes, Worldslayer + helmsmasher is just... I have no words honestly. I think my friend runs 10 wipes, I could be wrong. 3ish of them get around indestructible, just in case but otherwise Zurgo lives through them. And Zurgo + Sunforger gets to the magical 11 damage so you go from 3 swings to 2 swings. That is huge for a voltron deck.

All that said I'm also going to plug my own voltron deck Glissa's Tech. It isn't all that fast at winning a game but everything just keeps showing up no matter how many times the board gets wiped. Sometimes I wipe the board right after a Vandalblast and most my equipment comes rolling back out. Equip costs are pretty easy to deal with since I have all the manas.

But to go back to your question of best voltron colors I'm going to have to say the ones you enjoy the most. Voltron is a rather bad way to win in EDH, you have a lot of work to do when you sit down against 3 others and they are not going to make it easy on you. They will always find a way to kill your commander or kill all the stuff on him. So whatever you choose make sure it is something you like the feel and look of. Zurgo and Glissa are very different but they are both great in their own ways, you really can make just about any commander with a few decent keywords into a nightmare for your enemies.

I love how no one ever mention the one and only Ruhan of the Fomori when it comes to voltron. Sure his drawback can be annoying for politics (though you can try and turn it around saying it's not really your fault), but man a 7/7 for 4 mana is a serious bargain. His colors offer both voltron and control options so... go ahead and HF! ;)

I'd like to throw my hat into the mix with Eight-and-a-Half-Tails he's cheap to get out and provides protection to your stuff. you can watch your opponents squirm in there chairs trying to touch your equipment that now have protection from everything. XD i use Nahiri now but its still the same deck, check it out. Nahiri Equipment Vultron

Rock Slingers is my voltron deck. Line slinger gets voltron, while silas is used as buff and recursion. it has not been fine tuned yet.

Also the combo of Ishai, Ojutai Dragonspeaker and Bruse Tarl, Boorish Herder can be used as a good voltron commander pairing. I run this as a jeskai fliers deck, but can quickly one shot people without trying to run as voltron. As Ishai gets big quickly, get her up to 11 and give her double strike with Bruse to get 22 commander damage.

I don't have a list online, but my voltron deck is headed by Nazahn, Revered Bladesmith. He is pretty powerful and the deck doesn't suffer as much as other decks if the game goes long.

@SteelSentry

I love the idea of Nazahn now. I just feel like some earlier points about naya are well taken, especially with sun-forger. Do you think there is a way to maybe make a Naya deck with Nazahn in it? I just can't really decide on a commander, but this is the list of cards I have so far: Naya Equipment! [[Needs Help]]
